In this document we will introduce the how translated strings are stored, edited, and loaded to a site to display a new translation.<\/p>\n<p>The goal of this guide is not just to help you become familiar with translation. Once the new translations are setup in the GD site, you can edit and update your translation files any time. Once you start translating, and even changing the default text, you will probably find many ways to make the text &#8216;speak&#8217; to your community of users. <\/p>\n<p><a id=\"know\"><\/p>\n<h3><\/a>What you need to know<\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li><em><strong>.po<\/strong><\/em> and <em><strong>.mo<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0files are the standard method for storing &#8220;translated strings&#8221;.<\/li>\n<li><em><strong>.po<\/strong><\/em> files are for <strong><em>doing translations<\/em><\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><em><strong>.mo<\/strong><\/em> files are for <strong><em>showing translations<\/em><\/strong> on your site.<\/li>\n<li><em><strong>.po<\/strong><\/em> files can be edited with <em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/poedit.net\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">PoEdit<\/a><\/strong><\/em>, the free cross-platform desktop translation app.<\/li>\n<li>When you edit a <em><strong>.po<\/strong><\/em> file in PoEdit, and then save the file, PoEdit will also create\/update a matching <em><strong>.mo<\/strong><\/em> file.<\/li>\n<li>Store<em><strong> BOTH the .po and the .mo files<\/strong><\/em> in the the proper site folder.<\/li>\n<li>GeoDirectory Core Translations are maintained at <a href=\"https:\/\/translate.wordpress.org\/projects\/wp-plugins\/geodirectory\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">https:\/\/translate.wordpress.org\/projects\/wp-plugins\/geodirectory<\/a>, so go there if you want to download existing translations of GD Core.<\/li>\n<li>GeoDirectory Addon Translations are maintained at <a href=\"https:\/\/wpgeodirectory.com\/translate\/projects\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">https:\/\/wpgeodirectory.com\/translate\/projects<\/a>, so go there if you want to download existing translations of GD Addons.<\/li>\n<li>Finished translation files for plugins are stored in <em><strong>wp-content\/languages\/plugins\/<\/strong><\/em><\/li>\n<li>Finished translations for themes are stored in <em><strong>wp-content\/languages\/themes\/<\/strong><\/em><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"core\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Core Translation Files<\/h3>\n<p>GeoDirectory Core plugin translations are maintained at <a href=\"https:\/\/translate.wordpress.org\/projects\/wp-plugins\/geodirectory\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">https:\/\/translate.wordpress.org\/projects\/wp-plugins\/geodirectory<\/a>. If you are looking for existing translations of the GeoDirectory Core plugin in additional languages, you can go there to see which languages are available. <\/p>\n<p>If your language is not currently available or at less than &#8220;100%&#8221; then consider joining the GeoDirectory translation team where members work together to make excellent, accurate translations available in every language. The most common reasons that a translation file won&#8217;t load is because it is incorrectly named or because it is stored in an improper folder. <\/p>\n<table border=\"0\" align=\"left\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<th>Addon\/Theme name<\/th>\n<th>.po\/.mo folder path (text domain)<\/th>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Directory Starter Theme<\/td>\n<td>\/wp-content\/languages\/themes\/directory-starter-en_US.mo<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Supreme Directory Child Theme<\/td>\n<td>\/wp-content\/languages\/themes\/supreme-directory-en_US.mo<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"download\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Download Existing Translations for a Plugin<\/h3>\n<p>Here we provide an example of how to download an existing translation.<\/p>\n<p>In the example below, we will download an Italian translation of GeoDirectory Core, and then add the translation file to the GD site.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Navigate to the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/wpgeodirectory.com\/translate\/projects\">GeoDirectory language project pages.<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Select the language and addon of your choice.<\/li>\n<li>Example: Italian:<br \/>\n<img class=\"greenborder\" src=\"https:\/\/wpgeodirectory.com\/docs\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2015\/12\/lang1.png\" alt=\"\" \/><\/li>\n<li>Select the language file you want:<br \/>\n<img class=\"greenborder\" src=\"https:\/\/wpgeodirectory.com\/docs\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2015\/12\/lang2.png\" alt=\"\" \/><\/li>\n<li>Scroll to the bottom of the page and <em><strong>Export<\/strong><\/em> the file (accept the defaults so you download the whole <em><strong>PO<\/strong><\/em> file):<br \/>\n<img class=\"greenborder\" src=\"https:\/\/wpgeodirectory.com\/docs\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2015\/12\/lang3.png\" alt=\"\" \/><\/li>\n<li>Load the file to the proper folder (See <a href=\"\/docs\/translating-addons\/\">Translating Addons<\/a> for more information).<br \/>\n<i class=\"fa fa-lightbulb-o fa-2x\" style=\"color: green;\"><\/i> Change the file\u00a0extension, if necessary, for your locale. Example: <em><strong>-it<\/strong><\/em> to <em><strong>-it_IT<\/strong><\/em>.<br \/>\n<img class=\"greenborder\" src=\"https:\/\/wpgeodirectory.com\/docs\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2015\/12\/lang4-1.png\" alt=\"\" \/><\/li>\n<li>Create the <em><strong>MO<\/strong><\/em> file using PoEdit or download from the same page where you downloaded the <em><strong>PO<\/strong><\/em> file:<br \/>\n<img class=\"greenborder\" src=\"https:\/\/wpgeodirectory.com\/docs\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2015\/12\/lang5.png\" alt=\"\" \/><\/li>\n<li>Review the translations on your site. If you find untranslated strings, continue to the next section for information about how to edit the translation files.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"start\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Translation Process<\/h3>\n<p><a id=\"setup\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h4>Setup New Language Translation Files on the Site<\/h4>\n<p>First, the translations need to be setup on the site. Here is the overview of that process:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Download an existing translation or create a new file. In either case, save the translation .po file to the desktop.<\/li>\n<li>Open the file with PoEdit and select the new language. <\/li>\n<li>Save the file with PoEdit on to the desktop with the new locale.<\/li>\n<li>Find the .po and .mo files on the desktop.<\/li>\n<li>Transfer the .mo and .po files via FTP to the proper site folder.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a id=\"edit\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h4>Edit an existing language translation<\/h4>\n<p>Once your translation files are setup, then you can edit them any time you want with this process:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Login to the site with FTP and navigate to the appropriate languages folder.<\/li>\n<li>Download the appropriate .po file from the site folder, and save a backup copy in another location.<\/li>\n<li>Open with PoEdit, Translate with PoEdit, Save with PoEdit. <\/li>\n<li>Identify the new .po and .mo files in your local save location.<\/li>\n<li>Transfer the .mo and .po files via FTP to the proper site folder.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"poedit\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Translating with PoEdit<\/h3>\n<p>This example is for translation of the core plugin. The process is the same for any plugin or theme, with the notable exception that the files are stored in the site in different folders.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Download <a href=\"http:\/\/poedit.net\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">POedit<\/a>\u00a0and install the free program.<\/li>\n<li>Download the default translation. Each plugin or theme comes with English language .po and .mo files. Use FTP or cPanel to download the default language .po file to your local machine. You only need the .po file. Example:\u00a0<em><strong>geodirectory-<\/strong><strong>nl_BE.po<\/strong><strong>.<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/li>\n<li>PoEdit saves the .po and the .mo files:\u00a0<em><strong>geodirectory-<\/strong><strong>nl_BE.<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">po <\/span><\/strong><\/em>and<em><strong>\u00a0geodirectory-nl_BE.<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">mo<\/span><\/strong><\/em><\/li>\n<li><em><strong>transfer BOTH the .po and the .mo files<\/strong><\/em> via FTP to the proper folder on the site.<\/li>\n<li>Save a backup of the files on your desktop and in your personal cloud, just in case of emergency.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li>Translate the remaining strings.
