Taxonomies you register yourself, or with a plugin such as Pods or Custom Post Type UI, won’t appear on the GeoDirectory add listing form, in the custom fields screen or in GeoDirectory search. For an extra way to group listings, use a custom field.

Use a custom field in place of a taxonomy

A select, multiselect or radio custom field does the job of an extra taxonomy. You set the list of options, users pick from it on the add listing form, and the value can be shown on the listing.

Go to Places > Settings > Custom Fields.

Add a Multiselect field, or a Select field if a listing should have only one value.

In Option Values, enter each option on a new line. Adding Options to GeoDirectory Custom Fields explains the format.

To display the value, pick where under “Show in extra output location”, or add it to a tab.

Save the field.

With the Advanced Search add-on, the field can also be a search filter, so visitors can narrow results by one or more of its values. See How to Add a Filter to the Advanced Search Filters?.

Using categories as a flat list

If this grouping is the main way people browse your directory, categories may suit it better, as every category gets its own archive page. Categories without sub-categories work like a flat, tag-style list.

On the Category field in Places > Settings > Custom Fields, “Category display type” sets whether users pick one category (select or radio) or several (multiselect or checkbox). To cap how many categories a listing can have, set Category Limit on a Pricing Manager package, or add this snippet:

add_filter( 'geodir_cfi_post_categories_limit', 'my_gd_category_limit', 10, 3 );
function my_gd_category_limit( $limit, $post, $package ) {
return 5; // Maximum number of categories per listing.
}

The limit is used when the display type is multiselect or checkbox. The Code Snippets plugin is the easiest way to add snippets.

Sharing categories between post types

Each post type has its own categories, so two post types can’t share one set of terms. Create the categories in each post type. Exporting the categories from one post type and importing them into the other in GeoDirectory > Settings > Import/Export can save time.

GeoDirectory gives each post type one category taxonomy and one tag taxonomy.
