If I add a custom post type then there is a dropdown menu in the search to choose the custom one or places. Or, can places be disabled.

you can either edit the Place, Custom Post Type and change its name or create a new custom post type and avoid using the default CPT Place and if there are no listings, the dropdown will not appear.
