Yes, each site would be independent, but then is it possible to have the primary site as a base for all the others. So it would effectively be a directory of all of the other directory sites. Here is an example of the sort of thing that I mean. http://cityusa.biz/

I presume that you cannot link any entries or data back to the primary site either?

you can’t, the main site will be a directory like all others. It will not auto-fetch data from subsite.
