The filters could be anywhere on the homepage, maybe in a dropdown box or overlay on the map (like the categories list is), whichever is easier.

Filters would be time based and can include:

past events
today events
future events
morning (0600 to 1200)
afternoon (1200 to 1800)
evening (1800 to 2400)

If you have suggestions as to any additional filter criteria that would be useful from a visitors perspective, perhaps duration of event (1 hour, 2 hours etc)

On clicking/selecting a filter, the map would dynamically update to only include those events that satisfy the filter, much like how the categories list map overlay does.
