I’ve been away from my project for a while and need to update, I’m several versions out of date. Are there any special precautions or methods, other than creation of backups, that I need to use? Can I update directly from older version 1.2.7 to 1.4.5 ?

Second, before doing anything else, go to GD tools and run the DB convertion tool. That is the only necessary thing needed when moving from 1.2.+ to any version after 1.3
