You’d need to customize that widget, currently it can only show categories sorted by listings count.

The widget class can be found in geodirectory-widgets/geodirectory_popular_widget.php

It’s the 1st on top. You should copy and paste it in your theme’s functions.php file, rename the class and widget name/description and modify it to suit your needs.

Most directories work on an alphabetical sorting method similar to normal tele-directories so customers are used to it and do not like to search around to find something that should be listed under say M.
Can this become a request for the immediate near future?
