This is a good point, I too would like the ability to show "NEAR" search results on location pages. The user experience would be much better, as people could find listings in smaller towns, which are right next to larger towns.
The only hack I found was to create a 301 redirect from the location page of a town, to the search page of a town. Although this requires you to manually create a redirect from every location page, to the corresponding search page. But this is terrible for SEO, and your location pages will never rank, as they have been redirected to the search page.
@Guust is there any way to enable the "Search as I move the map" feature on location pages?
