I just came across this plugin which sounds like a good accompanyment for a directory site – especially when the general public are uploading their own images.
It allows setting maximum dimensions for uploading images, and shrinks big images to the pre-defined limits.

I don’t have any connection to this plugin, just sharing something which may (or may not) be useful 🙂

I’ve just come across this plugin myself, and decided to search the forums to see if it had a mention ..lo and behold!

How has it measured up by anyone using it? Any probs? And what resizing settings have people found adequate?

    Thanks,
    Adrian

GD now has the option to resize images to what is considered the optimal size:

I don’t really know how imsanity would impact on GD, never used it.

    Thanks Guust,

does this mean that all images uploaded for listings are automatically resized before (or during) upload – i.e., so that server disk resources are not used up too quickly – or is it more concerned with displaying images on the directory (with large image files still being uploaded and eating up disk space?

Images are resized on upload, to minimize server space and maximize load speed.
Also, normally WP creates a few different thumbnail sizes that fills your server space unnecessarily, but those are not created for GD because they are not needed, so saving space that way too.

ok, so basically, it appears there is no need to use the Imsanity plugin since GD performs the same task (unless minimizing previously uploaded images, which Imsanity does).

    Thanks

    one further thought:

I have buddypress (and bbpress) on my geodirectory site. Would the GD imaze resizer also resize images uploaded through buddypress activity lines (e.g. plugin BuddyPress Activity Plus) and forum postings? Or does it just resize images uploaded as part of listings?

GD does not control other plugins, so it will not re-size any images not uploaded as part of a listing.

OK thanks Guust – mayby there is a place for Imsanity in my setup – I will see how it goes.
