there are several settings to consider.
Adjust file sizes in GD > Design > Detail
The size of the image used in listings at GD > Design > Listings
Adjust the WordPress media settings at WP > Settings > Media

try re-installing the plugin with a fresh copy from WordPress.org

The GD Home Map can be set to “Auto Zoom” which will automatically zoom the map out to include all the listings you have on the site.
To focus it on the USA, you can add listings within the USA, perhaps both coasts, and then the map will zoom out to include those listings.
