Guidance About Overall Directory Set Up

    Hi GeoDirectory Team!

    I recently wrote an extended email and it didn’t go through for some reason (I believe it was on my end, not yours). So, here will be a shorter, more succinct version :).

    We are creating a Directory for 50+ men and women to help them find ideally suited sports and fitness opportunities in their area.

    To start, we’ll be covering 54 sports in 100+ cities. We also plan to have sports related categories show up within each sport – for example, on the “home page” for GOLF, we want to have categories for tournaments, camps and clinics, leagues, group classes, etc.

    We’re not sure the best way to approach this – “best” as in easiest for us and our viewers. Meaning, we’re hoping that we don’t have to add the tournaments, camps and clinics, leagues, etc., as sub-categories under each sport.

    How would you recommend we approach this? Can we just make them all top level categories – meaning the sports, sports related categories, and cities and somehow have them all show up on the “home page” of each sport?

    For example, the main page for GOLF would include links to all the tournaments, camps and clinics, leagues categories, and to all the cities that have golf.

    I hope this makes sense and we appreciate any guidance you can provide. Thank you!

    The listings you are describing have different dates and times, so they would be best added as events.
    I am seeing a custom post type (CPT) called Events, with categories like golf, fitness, chess etc.
    A SELECT custom field with options like tournament, camp etc would allow visitors to filter by type of event.
    On the /events/ page you automatically would have all events. Going to /events/golf/ would list all golfing events.
    A filter in the Advanced Search Will allow visitors to only choose tournaments in the golf category.

    With the Custom Post Types addon you can create a CPT like ‘venues’ and create a directory of local venues. Events can be linked to the venues, so each venue can have a sort of mini calendar list of upcoming events.

    For venues use a category like ‘golf-course’ and then for events a category like ‘golf-event’

    Thank you Guust and Alex for your responses. I’m not quite sure I’m seeing what you’re saying. For example, not all the listings will have dates or venues, so I’m not seeing the big picture.

    (Although I love the idea of having multiple events for a specific venue show up in the same place.)

    To reiterate, we’re going to feature 54 sports – like archery, basketball, tennis, softball, track and field, volleyball, etc. And, for each of those, we want to show associations, leagues, tournaments, camps and clinics, instructors, etc.

    Isn’t the Events addon more like a calendar or is it more like a regular category? I remember connecting with someone before purchasing GeoDirectory Membership and he said that he would recommend your Events addon in place of The Events Calendar that we currently use.

    I guess I assumed that it would put things on a calendar like The Events Calendar, as opposed to simply being another custom post type. Perhaps I’m not thinking about “Events” in the right way to begin with.

    How about this … what if I created a category for each sport (54), and a category for tournaments, camps and clinics, etc., is there a shortcode that I could put on the BASKETBALL “home page,” (for example), that would list the tournaments, camps and clinics related just to basketball?

    That way, each could be listed separately in their own category but all could come together on the same page.

    Again, I appreciate your ideas. I’m seeing 1,000’s of listings across all 50 states and I want to see if I can create a foundation to handle it without creating a lot of extra work or duplication.

    Actually, I just realized I may be looking at this backwards. Maybe it’s the sports related categories that are the important thing and there’s a custom field where it relates to one of our 54 sports.

    Then, the question simply becomes how we can have a page for each of the 54 sports that shows all the categories and cities with golf listings.

    Perhaps that’s a better way to think about it???

    Other than having the listings easy to search for our people, the main thing we’re after is having each sport and city have its own sponsorable page/listings.

    That will ultimately be the million-dollar question (literally :).

    Events are listings that are date limited, like the US Open or the World Cup, or a birthday party.
    Each city, custom post type and category automatically has its own page.

    Every listing needs to be in one CPT only [for example Events or Venues] and must be in at least one category but can be in more than one category.

    Think of this as a weekly golfing class:
    https://wpgeo.directory/docs/events/italy/lombardy/milan/food-events/pizza-night-at-zavino-pizzeria-and-wine-bar/

    As you can see in the sidebar, the events is at the Zavino Pizzeria and Wine Bar [think Venue or golf course].
    So if you go to the Venue page: https://wpgeo.directory/docs/places/italy/lombardy/milan/restaurants/zavino-pizzeria-and-wine-bar/#events
    You can see all the events in that Venue, in the Events tab.
    So that is what Alex is talking about.

    This page would list all your events:
    https://wpgeo.directory/docs/events

    This page would list all your events in a particular category:
    https://wpgeo.directory/docs/events/category/food-events/

    And this page lists all events in a particular category in a particular city:
    https://wpgeo.directory/docs/events/category/food-events/italy/lombardy/milan/

    How to organize your listings is your first step. I suggest that you create a test site and play with the options until you find what will work best for you.

    So, if I understand this correctly, he pizzeria itself was in the Places CPT and the Events were in Events CPT.

    Somehow though the events showed in a tab on the Places Listing, too.

    It had this message, which I didn’t understand – “This is a linked event, added by one user to a listing of another user. Look in the sidebar for a link to the listing this event is linked to.”, but I like how you could find the events under the Places listing.

    QUESTION(S):

    1. Is each event a separate listing in Events?
    2. If so, would a person need to pay separately for each Event listing? (if we wanted to set it up that way).
    3. Could 1 or 2 Event listings be included in the price of a Places listing (for example), while 3 or more events would be a higher price/package?

    Correct.

    Yes, because the tab is added on purpose at Places > Settings > Tabs.
    That is optional.

    You can allow one user to add events to a listing of another user, or you can restrict linking to the same user.
    For example, you have one user add a music hall. But you allow other users to link the details of their concerts to that music hall.
    Or, you have one user add a golf course, but you allow only that user to add events at that golf course.

    One event can have many dates, for example a movie screening can have a number of sessions. That would be added as one event with recurring sessions.
    But each session could be added as a new event too, but normally not.

    If you charge for listings, then each event will be charged. For the above example, the movie with recurring sessions will incur one fee only.
    Different price packages can be created for events that allow for recurring times and dates.

    No, each listing is treated by itself. In the future we intend to more complex packages like you describe, but there is no estimated time for that yet.
