@Ronald,
Not sure if this is the issue, but one thought on images…be sure there aren’t any spaces or periods (fullstops) in them, which could throw off the upload/naming.
I found that a number of the test photos I was using taken from my phone had periods in the naming like this one, “2014-07-04 12.17.03.jpg”
cheers
Basically, any location URL beyond the root “/location/” so selection from the switcher or clicking a link from the Location widget. Places and events URLs, even if they are “/places/some-city/” are okay as are the detail pages.
Which highlights one thing that I wish was different with the locations…that the location would only “switch” when a user actually changes it from the “Change Location” switcher, but not from the links. In this way, drilling into a location is no different, from a user’s perspective, than drilling down into a category/subcategory structure…they don’t expect any kind of permanence.
Let me drill down into a location from the widget or other links, but when I back out or go back to the homepage, return to “Everywhere” automatically. I actually think this is how most people will expect this to function.
cheers
Thanks guys, good to know.
On the free-end, this one is looking pretty good, Front-End Users, though I haven’t tried it out yet. But seems pretty straight forward and not overloaded for something like this.
Definitely like the idea of having basic functionality built into GD and avoid loading up another plugin.
TML looked interesting too, but I felt a little skittish with some of the reviews talking about getting completely locked out of the system.
I’ve restyled the login/registration page already to make it unique without needing a plugin and I thinking adding BWS Captcha plugin not only added captcha but email password on registration before commenting/posting…could be wrong, still need to doublecheck that, but I don’t remember that happening prior to adding that one.
cheers
Thanks for the feedback.
Looking at some of those and thinking about this, I’m thinking maybe something even simpler now.
Any experience/thoughts on more of a frontend user profile management plugin, preferably free/low cost?
Thinking basics like upload an avatar, brief bio, social profile links, etc.
thanks
Not sure if this is an Enfold issue or broader than that…
1) Noticing the “Customize My Search” button when using Advanced Search ends up cutting off various amounts of the text as the browser window is reduced.
2) Anyway the widget could be formatted to be more fluid so that it could be placed in a sidebar?
cheers
Ok. The weird thing is I could have sworn a couple updates ago, the country part didn’t show up on any URLs, but maybe I just didn’t notice.
I do have it restricted to one region, and for the listings themselves, it is okay as it only has the city and listing name.
cheers
I understand not wanting to be tied too tightly into any other plugins, but just wondering if there would be more value for all and easier if GD could simply rely on something like Yoast’s SEO Plugin?
The odds are pretty good that at least half of the users of GD will be using it anyway. But perhaps it isn’t possible to use it for some of the GD pages like everyone is hoping.
Anyway, just an idea.
Either way, thanks for planning on removing the SEO keywords since they have no impact on SEO. Hate to think about people wasting time better spent elsewhere trying to fill that in and keep it updated.
cheers
Haven’t tested any of this to the degree you have Greg, but I’ve loaded up EWWW Image Optimizer.
I tried WP Smush.it first, but couldn’t actually get it to run as it kept timing out (I think, don’t remember for sure). One nice think about EWWW is that there are a number of settings you can make and you can also apply it to images that have already been added. It will tell you the “savings” on the backend as well.
With that in mind, one approach…perhaps, haven’t actually looked to see if this is a viable option… would be to allow the full uploads and then periodically run it across the library. Ideally though, hopefully you could set it and forget it and it would run without taxing the system too heavily.
cheers
Excellent John! This is very helpful and truly appreciate you sharing your knowledge.

Ah, I hadn’t tested the function when I was actually logged out 😉
That said, I think it would be helpful to either grab it in the form (easier) or retrieve it from the database to include it in the email notification to the Admin.
Otherwise, this requires extra effort trying to look it up manually.
Cheers
sorry, my site at the moment is behind a wall. My situation is similar to purpleedge’s and yours, dealing with a fairly hyper-local focus.
And while I’ve described how it works, or at least my understanding, and how I think it should work (at least one variation), I’m not sure any of that is entirely correct.
Hopefully though it sounds like there is enough interest around that alternative functioning will be built in so that things work “as needed” for specific needs of the site.
cheers
August 14, 2014 at 1:33 pm in reply to: Search custom post types from another custom post type #12048Well, I’m not entirely convinced I’ve sorted it all yet myself.
I think there are a couple elements here.
Yes, there is the “Search Near” component and how it searches, some ways good, some ways bad, such as leaving out a location right across the street from another location simply because it isn’t in Sydney.
With regard to what is returned based on CPTs, it all depends on the architecture. If Bars and Theatres are all in an Entertaiment CPT as categories, then both might be returned for a search and both will show up together on the maps when the Entertainment CPT is selected.
But if you have theatres in one CPT and bars in another CPT, they are siloed from one another, and that’s totally independent from the “Search Near” entry.
More confusing?
cheers
Stiofan,
I think the text box is a little non-standard and may be confusing for users. I’m already more familiar with GD than most people coming to the site, and when I clicked on “My Listings” I didn’t think to type in Places or Events, but tried typing in the title of one of my test listings, only for it to say that nothing was found.
I just think a dropdown scroll window that lists the items removes a lot of ambiguity and confusion.
cheers
August 14, 2014 at 3:07 am in reply to: Search custom post types from another custom post type #11995Unfortunately no, that is purely location focused. You still need to select the CPT to search within; by default setup that is Places vs. Events.
In that case, maybe not a big deal, but if you create CPTs for more category level (like I’m looking it, mostly for the ability to create richer, more relevant field entries), now you may have to search twice if there are separate CPTs for Restaurants and Bars. And you can allow multiple category placement for a listing, but that doesn’t span CPTs.
So if Purple’s Bar & Grill only decided to purchase a restaurant listing because that’s their primary focus, but I only know it as a bar, I might not find the listing.
Or if a hotel has an onsite restaurant/bar, they would need to purchase 3 separate listings for all to come up. Extreme example, but not outside the realm of possibilities.
Again, thanks for the ideas.
It’s all relative, but the 11 or so categories/CPTs planned are fairly paired down based on analysis of other popular, related sites and some general keyword research. Perhaps 1 or 2 could be combined, but that would really start to blur the relevancy.
In this case, the main reason for having multiple CPTs goes back to setting up unique, relevant fields. If GD could be setup to allow field customization at the category level (inherited or further customized at child levels below that), then CPTs would necessarily be needed for this. I’d prefer that and leave CPTs for things like directory listings vs. events vs. job listings vs. property listings, etc.
That said, I do agree with your #3 point about breadth.
I’ve been thinking about a pricing page as well like you have there, as much for greater presentation capabilities around pricing tiers as anything.
To add to purpleedge’s questions, I’d add a 1b. to the list:
The ability to restrict listing selection within categories, or put simpler, “forced submission to the lowest level.” Ideally this should also be left to admin discretion to either allow selection/submission into parent level categories (e.g., restaurants) or only allow in child levels (e.g., Italian restaurants, Chinese restaurants, etc.) -
