There is no easy answer…it depends.

Personally, I’ve been blown away so far with Enfold, especially with the Avia advanced editor. Granted, the flexibility that page builders bring in being able to easily create a custom page layout without touching any code or CSS often comes with a huge price in page-code bloat. From what I’ve seen so far though, I think it is excellent, and not much more than one would expect with many of the frameworks that are out there.

I also think Enfold has a very clean and well organized UI, powerful but simple, which is rare. Most importantly, I think it will make it much easier for me to pull together a site that is visually unique…not exactly Enfold, not exactly GD.

The biggest challenge currently falls into two areas, that will hopefully not be an issue here soon (hopefully)…

    – having a truly stable GD release candidate…not a knock against the team as I know they are doing a great job, but I think we are still very much alpha stage, hopefully bordering on beta here soon. Unfortunately though, themes and compatibility packs really aren’t of much use until the foundation is shored up.

    – challenge of taking full advantage of what Enfold can do. The Avia builder is great, but I also have to rely on the AMR Shortcode Any Widget plugin to fully tap into the ability to create custom pages. And of course, that gets limited for GD beyond the homepage as well…but those limitations aren’t any or at least much different with GDF.

Ultimately though, as they say, your mileage may vary.

    Cheers,
    Brian

    Paolo,

Yes it is. Should it not be, or is this a “could be issue” that is cropping up?

Okay, and not entirely certain…challenging to test, but I believe the whole city showing up twice in the breadcrumbs appears with the patch, but doesn’t happen with the current production files.

    Ex.

You are here: Home / Places / Chicago / United States / Illinois / Chicago / Restaurants

    Hope that helps.

    Okay, a bit of a breakthrough…

I reverted the geodir_location_functions.php and geodir_location_hooks_actions.php files back to the original from the ones Vikas provided in the sister thread to this one.

    With the production files:

    • no country code in URLs (as should be)
    • having a selected location though, unable to get back to homepage (Enfold theme, custom homepage rather than GD homepage)

    With patch files:

    • country code starts appearing in URLs (location and places…places is unusual as it only seems to appears as John noted, in the meta links on the detail pages) when it shouldn’t be
    • however, am able to return to homepage when a city has been selected, selector retains the city

So it would appear that the patch fixed some things but also broke some functionality in the process.

    Cheers,
    Brian

    An aside to your post…

Out of curiosity I took a peek at your site. Couple things I wanted to mention.

On the homepage you have the map full screen and have the “Enable mouse scroll zoom” setting enabled. You might want to reconsider. For myself, I have a mouse with a scroll wheel which I use for scrolling pages, however if I’m hovering over the map, the map scrolls, not the page. I have a very wide monitor and high resolution, so your map doesn’t take up a lot of vertical space and it is very easy for me to relocate my mouse to scroll the page. That may not be the case with all users, and/or they may not even understand what is happening and not realize there is more content below the map or just get frustrated and leave.

Second, on the detail page and perhaps other pages, you probably have the maps set to “auto-zoom,” which in general is a great feature. However, on the detail page especially, or any page with only a small number of points clustered together, the map zooms in so tight that all you see is the map icon at default. It doesn’t even look like a map. This either appears to be useless to the user, or at the very least, it forces them to back the map out to some level that is useful.

I’d suggest finding a “general” map level, setting your detail pages on that, and unselecting the auto-zoom feature for a better user-experience. To start, try somewhere between 13 and 15.

    Hope that helps.

    Cheers mate,

    @john

Hadn’t noticed that, but yes, that is true. The million dollar, or pound if you like, question is still why??? 😉

My configuration is still set to only include the city, not the country since the site is a hyper-local focus.

    @guust
Thanks and thanks for sharing your test site.

The location links from the widget may not be “as much” an issue now…before when I would select a location and then go to the homepage, all of the locations disappeared and/or the location widget didn’t appear any more, essentially removing one of the ways to select another location.

But now even with a location selected, when I return to the homepage, the location widget still serves up links to the other cities. Maybe that was fixed with Vikas’s new files.

On a similar note, I also wonder if the country URL issue is due to those files as well, so I may try swapping out with the original ones to see if those issues persist.

One thing I wish is that when a user changes location, it would stay on that page, rather than going to the location page — user is looking at “hotels” then realizes they want to change the location, they probably expect to see the page “reflect” that change, hotels for the location they selected. It’s a bad user experience, but extremely common at least.

@john, thanks for the input as well.

    Cheers,
    Brian

Just thought I’d check in to see if anyone else is having issues with emails not being sent?

@rockhopper & @leandrorosa have you tried any of the recommendations above?

    Paolo,

From an Enfold point of view, using the Avia advanced page editor combined with GD shortcodes would be amazing…to easily be able to change around the layout of listing and detail pages at anytime without touching any code, duplicating/moving files, etc. would be huge.

I don’t know if something like this would be doable, but if you could, you would unleash a level of power with GD unlike anything out that, at least as far as I know. DirectoryPress comes close with selectable, pre-configured layouts.

    Cheers,
    Brian

    @guust

If the Location pages use the same widget sections as the homepage, does it allow for a sidebar? Even after dropping widgets into the “GD Home Right Section,” nothing appears except for the Content Section widgets.

    And another separate question.
Does the “Popular Locations” widget trigger a location selection like the drop down?

If I click on a location on my homepage from that widget, I go to that location page and the dropdown selector still says “Everywhere.”

Then I click to go back to the homepage, selector still says Everywhere, but I get my main blog page again (issue mentioned above). I have to reselect “Everywhere” and reload the homepage to get it back. I’m targeting a fairly small geo location where it is feasible that someone may want to look at listings in a particular location, but not be locked into that location.

There is still the issue of when a city vs Everywhere has been selected, going to the homepage no longer serves up my selected homepage, but rather the main blog page.

This has not been an issue until today.

    Cheers,
    Brian
