+1 And thanks for being open and responsive to making changes, which hopefully I believe will only make the product that much better.

    cheers

Ah…yeah, I think that’s what I was seeing where if there was a similarly named location that was more prominent, then that location was being used to calculate distance. I’m guessing this is being grabbed via the Google map API and is as much a Google “you must have meant” call.

You must have meant London, UK, not London, Ohio.

You must have meant Mexico the country, not Mexico, Missouri.

You must have meant Woodstock, New York, not Woodstock, Illinois.

    etc.

    @purpleedge

That is a little unfortunate though. Keyword signals in URLs aren’t necessarily as powerful a signal to search engines as we might hope, but they are a signal at least and could be just as important a user signal looking over SERP listings and could be that added “call to action” over other listings they may not have that locational signal.

Anyway, hope it works out for you, and even more so, hoping that an even better solution comes from the GD team to avoid needing to rely on that. For me, one of the reasons I switched over from a competing solution was because I’d get the locational signal in the URL with GD.

    Boolean Widgets

Easy ability to create and add a boolean based widget box into any area of the site.

    For example:
    – free listing vs. paid listing, or bronze or silver package vs. gold package…use to show advertising or related listings on the listing detail page, or not for paid/premium listers.
    – content based on verified owner status, or business owner vs. regular user.
    – related content not equal to listing category; example, on a listing detail page for a restaurant, don’t show other restaurants, but do show other nearby category listings; or show specific types of content such as events and attractions only.

The simple example here is that you don’t want to have someone pay to list their sushi restaurant and then show 3 other competitors on their listing page.

    cheers

    Struggling here a little bit.

Feels more like two themes rather than a theme and plugins. With Enfold, I see that I have the ability to really custom create just about any look and feel to the pages I could imagine thanks to the Advanced Editor. And then with GD, I have the engine to power the site, but seems more like they run parallel rather than intertwined.

Maybe I’m missing something or don’t have things setup right, but what I’m looking for is the ability to craft my pages with Enfold and pull in GD content where and how I want it.

I’m assuming that this is where the shortcodes will come in? Am I wrong in that assumption? Is there a list of shortcodes yet?

    Cheers,
    Brian

    Thanks John, I’ll try that.

I don’t have a ton of expertise in WP yet, so I wasn’t entirely sure whether it was a me issue, a Enfold issue, a WPGeo issue, or some combination there of.

Either way, hopefully all can be configured at some point for a safe child-theme isolation to help avoid potentially breaks with updates, especially when you start layering on multiple themes and plugins.

That said, the more I think about WP’s whole child-theme thing, while it is better than nothing, it really seems to be more of a poor-man’s SVN…at which point it may be just as easy to do a file compare and merge.

    cheers,

How best to use this with a child theme?

I ask because I initially copied the code into the end of the Enfold child theme functions.php file, which was a straight copy of the parent version, however that started throwing errors just trying to activate. Those errors appeared to be related to the actual Enfold code, so I assumed that it didn’t like getting the same code twice.

I then stripped out all of the Enfold code and pasted in the compatibility code. At that point it seemed to work fine, but when I tried deleting some of the other themes I had, new errors popped up:

Warning: Cannot modify header information – headers already sent by (output started at /home/mysite/public_html/c/wp-content/themes/enfold-child/functions.php:1) in /home/mysite/public_html/c/wp-includes/pluggable.php on line 1121

It did appear to remove the other themes anyway.

Just not sure if this code expects to be called after the Enfold code (at the end of the functions.php file) is parsed, which may be a problem with this child setup…I’m assuming part of that issue is that Enfold needs to fix their code so that a copy of the functions.php file into a child-theme shouldn’t break anything.

    Clear as mud?

    Cheers

Just to add to the conversation…

I’m also approaching this with a more “local” site, targeting a US county, composed of a handful of cities, with some clustered and some more solitary.

I’m testing with both MultiLocation on and off, and neither is very ideal so far.

    With MultiLocation off:
    – GD search without state specified, on some cities must be selecting that city in a completely different state as the results turn into 500+ miles away. As a local focus, I really can’t count on people to always enter in the state on a city reference. Likewise if they type in a street name or address.

    – Very confusing once a user clicks on a city reference as it narrows all results on that city. Even when navigating back to the homepage, it locks on that city but there is no indication to this to the user unless they look at the URLs on the links that then reference that location.

This actually makes it harder for the user to then broaden their search unless you have links throughout the site to other locations.

    With MultiLocations on:
    – same issue as above when searching near a city without including state. This is also true even if I’ve changed my location to that city.

    – Often when I hover over the location changer to select a different city and click on “Everywhere” or the current city, nothing happens. Have to refresh the page or click the “Change Location” text…most users won’t understand this. (Based on FireFox 30.0, PC, desktop).

I was about to use it without MultiLocation, but at least with it, there’s a better chance of users being able to change to locations and/or realize they are looking at a segment of results based on a location.

Another possibly unrelated issue is when changing the address of listings from the admin backend (haven’t tried this on an initial submission), some addresses would completely change after hitting “Set Address on Map,” either going to a completely different location (either further down that street, on an entirely different street that doesn’t even intersect with that street; though possibly map city center), sometimes even a different city, and in other cases, the city, state and zip would stay the same, but the address number would change to a range (e.g., entered 2503, and it changed to 2500-2525). This continues multiple times of trying to place the location and setting on the map.

Again, these may be separate, unrelated issues.

I totally appreciate the challenge here…search, geolocation, and human input are individually three of the most complex things to tackle, let alone all three together.

I certainly like the possibility of searching from a single point, especially if that single point could be based on a user entry (ideally a “enter address, city, state and/or zip) or even placement on the map, or at least set in the admin area for more local uses.

    Cheers,
    Brian

Okay. I think it would be good if it would also indicate that as well.

For instance, once the listing is created, if I go in on the front end as the user or in the admin backend, neither radio button is selected to visually reflect the default selection.

    Advanced handling of “featured listings”

I tested showing Popular Post View sorted by “Featured” on the homepage with a sampling of listings marked as featured. While the featured listings were listed ahead of regular listings, they seemed to be set in order. I couldn’t tell if this order was based on location/proximity, listing recency, or some other factor.

Either way, it could be useful to be able to add additional configuration, separating out the types of listings from how they are presented so that various configurations could be possible:

    • Featured ahead of regular, both randomized
    • Featured only, showing newest first
    • Featured first, randomized; followed by regular listings, proximity order
    • Featured mixed with regular, proximity order

At the very least, hopefully this is based on proximity.

The real value here is in the upsell for featured listings. Especially if it isn’t based on location, but on newness or some other setting, those featured listings that fall off the first view lose a lot of value to justify higher fee.

If the option for selecting one time or recurring at submission can be added, it would be ideal if each price could be configured independently, allowing the ability to add an incentive for choosing recurring.

e.g., 3 months one time price of $30, or 3 months recurring price of $25

This would simplify the setup and selection of packages, rather than duplicating each package for a one time price and a recurring price.

Regarding the ” for ___ time(s)” is this an optional setting, whereby leaving it blank results in a “recurring until user canceled?” If not, is it possible to create that kind of duration aside from setting a really high number?
