Good evening, I have just been speaking to a web developer in relation to my site, I have asked him to help me update my site from a shared hosting platform to VPS and why I was doing it. He has said that he cant see the exact reason why not having the most recent version of open SSL should cause any issues (other than security) and has asked if you can specify exactly what version of open SSL I need (as in, the earliest version number). The server requirements on your website don’t say anything about open SSL or even having an SSL installed at all, it only states “WordPress in general requires more than shared hosting for anything bigger than a tiny blog or a static website”.
it goes on to state:
“All managed WordPress hosting uses caching systems that are not compatible with GD’s geolocation features.
Managed hosting is good only for blogs or static websites. The only caching system that works with GD is GD Booster, and all other caching needs to be disabled.”
I have checked and I have no caching plug ins on my site not even GD booster, so I don’t believe this will be causing any issues?
In relation to the updates no working properly is open SSL required to load the plug ins or is this specifically for the operation of geo-location?
Sorry for the delay I have been on holiday. So to clarify, what does not having an open SSL effect, is that what’s causing me not to be able to update the add ons, or is thy why if I type another town, city or postcode into the ‘near’ box it isn’t recognised or is this why thesearch radius function doesn’t appear to work correctly? Also do you have a guidance anyway as to how to update my SSL to an Open SSL, (like you do with how to add an SSL to the site) don’t worry if not, just thought I’d ask.
Thanks
This is the response I have had:

23.6.2016. 11:14Dear Miles,
Unfortunately, since this is a shared hosting platform this cannot be upgraded as it is using the default version from the repository, which is being used by the entire platform.
If we can be of any further help with regard to this or any other matter, please do not hesitate to contact us.
Kind Regards
Florin
123-regMy web host has said the SSL is now installed, I have also forwarded on the last message you sent me to them (about open SSL), are you able to test it now or does it have to have this open SSL to be able to test it?
It appears there was an issue with my web host, they have said they have now corrected this and the SSL should be showing in the next 24 hours. Also on a side note I have been trying to update the add on’s on my website but it keeps coming up with an error, I have ensured I have entered the correct licences key about 10 times but it still says it’s wrong, I have read on this forum that you have been having issues with the licence key, is there a work around so I can update the add on’s?
Hi, is there any update on this please?
Hi Paolo,
Just to let you know I now have the SSL on the website so you should now be able to test it…
Miles
Thanks for the info on SSL, I’ll get a certificate tomorrow and get back to you so you are able to test geolocation.
Thanks Paolo, ok I understand the featured listing set up now, I’ll ask my developer to create a mod for my website to Make it work for my needs.
In terms of the search function though I allow the website to get-locate me then search for builder and it still brings up ‘bob the builder test’ (30 ish miles away) despite that fact I have the advanced search set to 10 miles. If I click on the compass (on the front end) this also shows as default set to 10 Miles, and if I adjust the range it makes no difference to the search results (if I adjust to 200 miles no additional profiles are shown and If I adjust to 1 mile no profiles are removed). If I type another city or postcode into the ‘near’ box as well I just get a message stating no listings found despite the fact there are profiles within the towns I have searched for?
Hi Guust, thanks for getting back to me, the profile in question I have been testing on is ‘bob the builder test’, I am currently in Ludgershall UK, ‘bob the builder test’ profile is in Reading uk. If I search for a builder (whilst I have the ‘geo directory>>>general>>>>>search’ set to 40 miles) bob the builder test profile appears and it states it is 30.98 miles away from me despite the fact under ‘geodirectory>>>> advanced search>>> default near me miles’ is set to 10. Also if I click on the compass (on the front end) and change the distance in there to 1 mile, or 200 miles this makes no difference to the search results at all.
It seems as if the ‘geodirectory>>>> advanced search>>> default near me miles’ and the option to select how many miles away you choose on the front end (when you click on the compass) just don’t seem to be doing anything at all?
In terms of address format you’re right, there are some profiles which don’t have the correct address format as they were early test profiles for modifications I have done, all new profiles do have the address in the correct format but I simply haven’t gotton round to deleting all the early test profiles yet. However the profile in question ‘bob the builder’ test was created before any mods took place so there is no way it can have the incorrect address format…
Another thing is that if I click on ‘change location’ on my phone it brings up an error, my understanding is that you should be able to type a town, city or postcode into the ‘near’ box and it will search that location?
Lastly you mention that featured listing won’t appear at the top of the search results page, only on listing pages… So in my case if you want a builder and type builder into ‘search for’ I want it to bring up all the profiles in the ‘builder category’ within a certain range (should be 10 miles but I’m having issue with that as mentioned above) and to display the featured listing first, are you telling me that geo directory does not support that? (not an issue if it doesn’t although it seems like as standard it should do this, maybe an idea for an update? If it doesn’t though then I’ll ask my developer to add this in as a mod)
See attached… If this one works
See attached print screen
Thanks for getting back to me so quick, and sorry I didn’t mean to post it twice! I’ve just tested it again and bob the builder test (the featured listing) is still showing at the bottom? (See print screen attached)
Also I have amended the search default distance to 10 Miles from 40 in the ‘advanced search’ section but that doesn’t seem to make any difference, I still get profiles showing up more than 10 miles away. I found another section under general>>>search if I put 10 miles in there, then it only shows profile within 10 miles (great) but if I try and change the distance to more (on the front end of the website in the search function) that doesn’t seem to make any difference? I’ve also noticed that for some reason I don’t seem to be able to type in a town or a postcode to search from, it just keeps coming up with no results I can only search from ‘near me’
This reply has been marked as private. Thanks Stiofan,
that seems to work now, I am taken to the paypal website, however now when I’m on the paylap website it states ‘log in to complete the purchase’ (but the amount states ‘£0.00’ instead of £9.99 now and every time I try and log in I get an error message stating I need to add funds before I send any more money, but I have just put £20 in my paypal account?
