Hi Guust – Thanks – I’ll download the file and search out the -1 slug.

    Hi Alex

Thanks for replying. I think I’m going to dispense with creating ‘counties’ as parent categories – as you say, it is probably harder to maintain.

As an alternative, I’m going to: (a) search by county in the search bar, (b)copy the url, and (c) use this as the county link i.e. manually create the county links in widgets/footer or wherever using these urls. (The link I previously sent you – mysite.co.uk/places/essex – was a bit of a red herring: all I was doing was linking back to the parent category I had created myself and not any default county page. It had been a long day!)

Failing that, I’ll probably use the merge as you suggest.

If I get stuck, I’ll come back if I may and take you up on your offer to look at my site.

In the meantime, many thanks for your suggestions.

Hi Alex – Sorry to bother you but I’ve just realised what you meant originally. i.e. you meant to just manually set up links to each county page e.g. add

    “Visit Essex” etc.

manually in, say, a text widget or anywhere else as required.

If I’m wrong, please let me know – otherwise, I’ll close this thread and sorry for not realising what you were originally meaning.

    Kind regards

Hi Alex – Re: my message yesterday about wanting to show a list of ‘county’ links, rather than ‘cities/towns’ links, which I would like to appear as a list. Is there a way to linking to ‘county’ pages? FYI I always enter the county in the region field of each new place I add.

I have been reading up on other threads and it seems that the only other way to create ‘county’ rather than ‘city/town’ links is by going to ‘manage locations’ and then merging by county but that would presumably mean you could no longer provide links by town/city.

Otherwise, I can’t find any other way than as mentioned previously. For example:

    CREATE FOLLOWING CATEGORIES
    – parent category: County e.g. Essex, Hertfordshire, etc.
    – child categories for each county: e.g. car sales, car hire, car parts etc.

    AMEND POPULAR LOCATIONS WIDGET
    – Rename title: ‘COUNTIES’
    – Categories count to appear by default: 48 (there are 48 counties)
    – Check ‘show parent categories only’.

    ADD NEW PLACE:
    – select county as parent, and chose car sales etc. as child. Ensure child is the default category.
    – enter address as normal i.e. street is entered in ‘address’, county is entered in ‘region’, city or town is entered as ‘city’.

This way, all the counties will appear on the page whenever you place a popular locations widget.

If there is a better way, I would be very grateful if you could let me know because I appreciate that my way is a bit long winded.

FYI I am not allowing any users to enter the info (I’ve disabled any ability for users to log in etc).

    Many thanks.

    Hi Alex

Many thanks – for your suggestions – it seems to be working now.

With regard to categories, because Location structure is based on the Google Map API, I understood that the location pages were broken down by cities/towns, not (UK) counties. I think other posters have asked about this as well and told that locations are only broken down by cities/towns (i.e. the popular locations widget, lists cities/towns). Apart from making counties the parent category, do you know of any other way I can break down the areas by county?

In the meantime, thank you for all your help.

    Kind regards

Hi Guust – Many thanks. I allowed multi-region/multi cities, added a ‘new place’ in Birmingham, and then was able to add Birmingham in ‘manage locations’ so it seems fine now. Thanks again and also for the links.
