    Hello all,

Thank you for taking the time to read my post. I’ve spent the past few weeks trialling GeoDirectory, which I think is great! I’ve also had great support from the comments already on this forum, it’s a great resource.

I was hoping I could explain my desired setup and those willing could comment their recommendations on how I might achieve it or something similar.

So, I’d like to use GeoDirectory as a directory of services within our company. But, I’d like to have each user assigned to a category (or subsite) that is restricted to certain categories. I’ve attached my ideal structure which may explain this a little better.

What I’ve tried so far is to have wordpress run a multisite installation (each department being a multisite). The problems I encounter with this are; some categories and places will ideally be shared (ensuring they’re kept up to date) so duplicating them onto another multisite isn’t ideal. Also, I want all users to log into the same page (geodirectory.mysite.com). This works and results in the user being redirected to the appropriate subsite (i.e. geodirectory.mysite.com/department1) but I’d also like them to still have access to the main site. Currently, returning to the main site results in the ‘you do not have access to this site’ message. Adding them as users does to the main site prevents redirection.

Categories/Places will be already made, so no new postings will be made, but the user will be able to add places to their favourites and edit the places they manage. No user requires access to the main site as this is intended as a login page only, geodirectory isn’t active there.

Another consideration I had was to have a wordpress installation for each department and set up an API that redirects them to the appropriate wordpress installation (department). I got a little stuck setting up a gluu server but could certainly try again if this has worked for others.

I appreciate that this isn’t how GeoDirectory was intended and I’m sure there’ll be comments about how I should use it the way it was meant to be, but I’d be interested to hear if a similar setup has worked for anyone else.

Is there a way to share categories or places between multisites, or restrict the categories available to users?

Thank you for taking the time to read my ramblings!

I can appreciate where you are coming from. I know in passing I have seen at least one plugins that say they will push users into all sub-sites.

Unfortunately GeoDirectory doesn’t have features for sharing across sites.

If I understand correctly, just having the one site and then control access to different pages etc based on the group the user belongs to with a membership plugin like s2member, should solve the problem?

This works perfectly for restricting access to those places, thank you Guust.
However, it doesn’t stop the places appearing in the search, any ideas?

You can use s2member conditional tags around certain sections of the GD Archive Item template.
    For example

    [s2If current_user_is(s2member_level4)][gd_post_images][/s2If]

    https://s2member.com/kb-article/s2if-simple-shortcode-conditionals/

I am not sure how you can adjust that for certain categories though.
