I haven’t found an answer for this anywhere. All my places listings on the backend and frontend are appearing in reverse alphabetical order. (Z-A). Is there a setting somewhere to fix that or is that the way the plugin is coded?

Right, you set a sort then mark it default, and it is applied whether you place GD loop actions on the page or not.
