On my download page Buddypress Integration is listed with the note “Licence not required”, but there is a place for a license number in the Auto-Updating/Licensing tab in my Geodirectory settings. So is a license required or not?

It does require a licence, it seems your membership has expired (now is a good time to renew). If you have any problems once renewed just let me know.
