So, I’m having problems with organizing my directory properly…
http://www.themeadery.net/commercial-meaderies/
I really do not want to show popular categories. Instead, when a user comes to that page – they see a directory of top level categories only:
United States
United Kingdom
etc…When they click on United States, then they see a listing of States in the the United States.
When they click on the State – they see the listings located in that State.
As it is right now, I find trying to locate a listing in a particular area – confusing and not intuitive.
Also – no matter what I do – I cannot get listings to show up Alphabetized. I do not want new listings to show at the top. I want all listings to be alphabetized…
March 13, 2015 at 6:48 pm #33972Hi,
that is because you aren’t using the plugin as designed.
Categories should only be used to identify listing sub-type (example for Custom Post Type Restaurant, Categories could be: American, Italian, Mexican, Pizzeria, Chinese etc… ) not locations.
For locations you should use the location switcher.
To sort alphabetically you have to go in Place settings and activate the AZ sort and make it default.
Thanks
March 13, 2015 at 6:53 pm #33973Paolo,
What is “location switcher”?
March 13, 2015 at 7:03 pm #33975There are 2 version of it.
Both can be seen here: http://wpgeo.directory/ in the main menu where it says Change Location (2nd from the right).
That’s the default option and it’s added directly via GD >> Multilocation to the menu you selected in GD >> Design >> Navigation as the menu to be used by GD for it’s elements.
There are also 2 Shortcodes:
1) [gd_location_tab_switcher]
this is like the location switcher usually added to the menu.
2) [gd_location_switcher]
this is best used on a page or a wide content area, this shows searchable lists of locations.
You can see it here http://wpgeo.directory/all-locations/
Thanks
March 17, 2015 at 8:48 pm #34336Hi,
In your second to last response, you mentioned that I wasn’t using the plugin as designed.
How should I be using it?
I basically want three tiers of categories
1. Organizations / Commercial Meaderies
2. Countries
3. Counties/States
I want users to be able to drill down to find the business listing their looking for.
For example, I want them to be able to select in this order:
1. Commercial Meaderies
2. United States
3. Michigan
….and see all of the Commercial Meaderies in the state of Michigan, United States.
March 17, 2015 at 9:37 pm #34339Hi,
In GeoDirectory categories and locations are 2 separate things.
Categories are used to categorize the listings
Example: Commercial Meaderies
Locations are used to define the Geographical location :
Example: United States or Michigan or Detroit.
Whenever you add a listing, you are already adding an address, country, region and city (Location).
Example: in http://wpgeo.directory/ you can see the location switcher in the menu. It is the 1st from the right in the main menu and says Change Location. There you can click on the region tab for example and select Illinois : http://wpgeo.directory/directory/united-states/illinois/
If you than click on category Landmark you see all listing that belong to category Landmark in region Illinois. http://wpgeo.directory/attractions/united-states/illinois/landmark/
I hope this is clearer.
Thanks
March 19, 2015 at 4:23 pm #34592So, I’ve changed my categories around – deleted the location categories I had set up and started three new ones:
Corvette Clubs
Corvette Organizations
Corvette RegistriesAll listings are now assigned to the Corvette Club category with the exception of two listings assigned to Organizations.
The location search tabs are not working properly. They change the map, but do not list any listings below:

March 19, 2015 at 6:33 pm #34624Hi,
you need to add widgets to GD Home content section widget area to show something below the map.
The location pages are basically GeoTargeted home pages: http://docs.wpgeodirectory.com/layout/
If you want to see the paginated list for 1 category in that location the link would be:
See the difference is mainly here /location/ that changes to /corvette-club-directory/ and adds the category name at the end?
To access that link you should just add the popular category widget somewhere or the popular post view widgets as explained above.
You are always using the Home page in the listings page. You should change to the listings map to have consistency between the map and the list below.
Let us know if you need more assistance. If you feel like sharing your wp admin credentials in a private reply, I can help you adding few example widgets to get you started.
Thanks
April 9, 2015 at 3:51 pm #36658Hi there,
I need some help on organizing categories, sub-categories in the plugin. What shall I add in the GD Home Top section so I can see all main categories without sub-categories as now adding the GD Popular Post Category results in seeing all categories and sub-categories with regards to popularity. Or I have to organise the data better.
Ex. Main categories: Baby, Education, Courses etc. Baby is having the following subcategories: Swimming, Yoga, Dance etc., Education is having the following sub-categories: Daycare, Primary school, Secondary school etc.I want to see only main categories and no sub-categories.
Many thanks for your time and kind support on that matter.
Bet,
RossyApril 9, 2015 at 6:38 pm #36696hi,
the popular category widget doesn’t allow to filter category/subcategory.
At the moment there is no way to do that, other than customizing that widget or creating an static html list in a text widget, copying the popular category widget html.
Thanks
