Comments Section in Theme

My theme has a section at the bottom that typically encompasses comments for blog posts. On the details pages, I just get a blank white box when comments are allowed (to allow for ratings) and the ratings area does show up in the Reviews tab in the main content. The only way to get the blank white box to go away is by turning off comments, which nullifies getting reviews. How would I turn off the comments section on these posts on the post template itself. Is there some code I could add somewhere. Or… if I wanted to create a theme template just for the details page, so I could leave out the comments section, how would I do that for the places and events details pages (something like single-places.php or single-events.php files in the theme directory)?
