Hello,
We much prefer to use the “checkbox” option for selection of multiple categories, however it seems the only way to control the default category is to use “chained ajax”.

Is there any other way to allow us to control the default category?

Hi Paolo,
Yes, I understand how to change it. But if we choose anything other than chained ajax, then we have no control over the default category.

Is it possible to have control over the default category (since this is important by controlling the map pin icon), AND use the checkboxes to choose category?

Hello!

The other options don’t give the same advanced control; if normal multiselect is used then the first cat becomes the default cat. You can change this in bulk via import/export but it will be changed back if the user edits the listing.

Ok, understood.

Since the default category is so important (for pins and default image) it would be great to have better control over it.

Is there any way to implement an admin only field for this?

Not without a customization. If you want to control the default category for each listing in the edit listing form, you can only use the Ajax Chain selector.

Otherwise as Alex suggested, you can do that via export > edit > import
