    Hi,

I want to build a directory of arts. I want people to search for:
Where ? (city) What ? (which kind of art) and for which festive occasion (wedding, birthday, aniversary,…)

What’s the best structure for building this directory ?
I thought of using CPT for every kind of art (darwing, oil painting, sculpturing) but how should I create the festive occasions ? Because they appear in every CPT.
    Example:
    City: Stuttgart
    Art: oil painting
    occasion: wedding
    But the same appears for
    City: Stuttgart
    Art: sculpturing
    occasion: wedding

Should I use categories for the occasions ? How did you guys solve this ?
Any advice would be great – thanks for your help.

Either CTP with categories, or categories with subcategories.
Either way, you will either have two categories or two subcategories named the same. That is not a problem, but it will mean you will have two categories listed in a popular category widget with the same name.

Thanks for your reply. Is it possible to solve this with another solution ?

I want to give my users the ability to filter for these things:
Where ? (city) What ? (which kind of art) and which ? (occasion)

Does the advanced filter allow me to do this ? If so: what can I filter ? only CPTs or CPTs and categories ? Or does it allow me to have 3 dropdown menues to filter for:
    [CPT] [Category] [SubCategory]

    Hi,

you can do that by using only 1 CPT and category and subcategory instead of using multiple CPT. Than you can create custom fields for “occasions” that is enabled for all categories.

Let us know if this could be ideal.

    Thx

How can this be done ? What is the only CPT I need ? Sorry but I’m confused. What can I do with the custom filed ? Is it searchable ?
Can you please give me an example ? That would be great – thanks.

Use only the default CPT Places.

All your art should be categories: oil painting, sculpturing and so on.

Go to Places settings and create the custom field for occasions.

It could be a select, with all your occasions as options. Make it available for all categories and at the end you will see a checkbox to enable it as advance filter. Tick that and save, than go to Advance Search Tab and add your new filter to the right box to enable it.

This will appear in the search box when clicking on customize my search.

I hope it is clearer now.

Great! Many thanks for this explanation. I didn’t think it is so easy with geodirectory…
