GD Import CSV issues

    A lot of times I find forum discussions are closed without a firm conclusion, so please forgive me, I am writing about the previous discussion again.

    I have been experiencing problems importing data; thus far I have only been importing c. 100 records at a time but it isn’t straightforward and shortly I plan to import 80,000 records, so I am anxious to get this right.

    Thus far I have experienced:

    – GD changing imported addresses and geocodes – please see

    – duplication of records – my fault but very easily done – the fix not so easy – I had to delete my import and start again 🙁 OK with 100 listings but not 1000’s
    – importing anbd then exporting and adjusting in OpenOffice -I don’t like OpenOffice at all btw – is very time consuming – is there a better way? Did the other 3rd party plug in mentioned ever become compatible with GD?
    – Please, please, please could the listing ID be shown in the backend to enable identification of duplicates etc. Could the ID be sortable and searchable. At the moment it is very difficult or impossible to match a CSV in Openoffice with the backend listing. I think the ID would help enormously
    – I have been trying to add the same photo and company logo to the 100 listings being imported. I have been importing the CSV, the copying the file path to the other listings in Openoffice to speed replication of photos in all listings and then reimporting the CSV. I get an error message and duplication of the photos in the media area even though the filename is the same? What am I doing wrong please?

    Very concerned about the 80,000 records I plan to import. I have calculated it will take 24 hours to import and I would like to definitely avoid the above problems. Is there a faster way to import the data?

    1.Sometimes users end up fixing the problem based on the advice, but never come back to let us know. The topic then gets auto-closed after a while.

    2. If you just want to change the marker position and nothing else in the backend, make a note of the address, drag the marker, correct any address bits that changed and save the listing.

    3. If you actually import duplicates, use the data column to sort them by the latest. That will make it easy to delete them again. Or make a backup of your database before you do a big import, which is best practice anyway.

    4. A duplicate listing does not have the same ID, so sorting by ID would not assist. Please see #3.

    5. You can just use the same image file name in the IMAGE column, for example van.jpg.
    Then uploading that image to the current month upload folder will add that same image to all listings.

    6. Import speed is governed by the server, that is basically the only variable in the process.

    2. I wasn’t aware you could drag the map marker in the backend – this is really helpful.

    3. I understand your point about duplicates. If this does happen and there are 1,000,s of dupes it would be very time consuming to delete them 20 at a time from the backend. Is there a way of speeding this up?

    4. I proposed showing the ID in the backend so that it is easy to compare any listing in GD with a corresponding exported CSV file in OpenOffice.

    3. Up the top of the Places screen in the backend, click on “screen options” and change from 20 to 200 or 500. That will make it a lot faster.

    4. You can sort all Places in the backend and the CSV by Title alphabetically? Then you can compare?

    3. Thanks for this – hadn’t spotted this one -still learning 🙂

    3/4. The challenge is that I have many ‘dealer CPT listings’ but with a different brand being represented with virtually the same business name and it is then difficult to pick the right listing. I still feel the display of the post ID would be helpful when comparing exported listings in OpenOffice with backend data – over 2 monitors. Could it be user optional to display the post ID like the other ‘screen options? – please see attached’

    Hi,

    I’m sorry, but adding the ID there isn’t really a quick thing to do.

    You can get the id of each listing by just hovering the listing title and check the ID in the corresponding link: see image attached
