Hi,
Thanks for this fab plugin – I have been searching for something like this for a LONG time and finally found you plugin. I have some questions that I could not find answers to in the forum or FAQ’s.
– Is it possible to have the grey area that is overlapping the map (where you choose the categories from) next to the map somewhere and shown more extensively?
– Is it possible to remove the italic parts of the text below that is shown above the listing on a listing page?
Home > Places > Netherlands > North Holland > Amsterdam > Restaurants > Restaurant Nacional
– Is it possible to show subcategories without the parent category? If I check the box to make the parent category invisible, the sub categories are also affected.
– Is it possible to use posts I have currently set up in my website as listings? I prefer to not create an extra page for something that is already on the website.Thank you for taking the time to answer my questions, it is very much appreciated.
October 28, 2014 at 9:41 pm #198851. That grey area that is overlapping the map can be moved left or right or up or down in relation to the map by adjusting the CSS. Not sure what you mean with more extensively; it will show all categories and subcategories for the post type being displayed on the map.
2. You can hide the breadcrumbs like “Home > Places > Netherlands > North Holland > Amsterdam > Restaurants > Restaurant Nacional” by CSS.
3. A listing in a subcategory is automatically also in the category.
So if you untick the category, you are asking to hide all listings in the subcategory as well. I hope I make sense.4. GD listings are a type of WordPress custom post type.
So normal WP posts cannot be added to GD posts, you need to create a GD listing.Anything else, just ask 🙂
October 29, 2014 at 10:07 pm #20044He Guust!
Thanks so much, got most of it working and have my search form next to the map now (http://newsite.eat-amsterdam.com/location/).
I have some other questions:
1) on a listing page such as this one: http://newsite.eat-amsterdam.com/places/netherlands/north-holland/amsterdam-1/restaurants-3/restaurant-nacional/
there are several boxes on the right side of the page, but there are no widgets in my GD listing right sidebar widget – so how can I edit what is shown here and what is not? I have no resolved this with CSS as follows:.geodir-details-sidebar-user-links {
display:none;}.geodir-details-sidebar-sharethis{
display:none;}Will that work or will it mess up the functionality of the rest of the plugin? In firefox it works as I want but in Safari there is still a bar shown with the text ‘login failed’. Any idea why?
3) Is there a possibility to add a rating to a place? I have installed a plugin but that only allows me to rate posts and not ‘places’. I have added Rating at GeoDirectory-Place Settings-Sorting Options, but not seeing it anywhere. I’m probably doing something wrong but I can’t see what….
4) Can I change the names of the data-tabs on the detailed page of a place? And make some invisible?
5) Is it possible to add place attachments directly from my Media Library instead of from my computer?
6) I want to divide my places in multiple categories at the same time. For example: I have one restaurant that is in the following categories: Restaurants, -French Restaurants + Location, -Amsterdam East + Price, -midprice. How do I go about making sure that my visitors can search the map with the criteria they desire and showing all relevant places? I am seeing with testing that checking an unchecking categories is not very satisfying for this cause. For example, unchecking the box location still shows the restaurant (because it is in the restaurant category). Do you see what I mean? Please see here for visual example (http://newsite.eat-amsterdam.com/location/) There are just two places on the map at this point.
7) Some places are shown with the category icon of the restaurant category and other items are shown with the category icon of the location category. What creates this difference when both places are in the same categories? Why are they not all shown the same?
So…. Sorry for all these questions but you said if there was anything else 😉
October 29, 2014 at 10:24 pm #200471. CSS will never interfere with the plugins etc.
The login failed I think is because your settings are wrong at GD > Analytics.
Send us admin details in a private message and we will have a look.
Other ways to edit those are to go to the custom fields and change things there: http://docs.wpgeodirectory.com/widgets/
Or use a translation file: http://docs.wpgeodirectory.com/category/translation/
It all depends what you want to change exactly.3. Do you want to rate, or your users?
GD has a built in rating system, seehttp://newsite.eat-amsterdam.com/places/netherlands/north-holland/amsterdam-1/restaurants-3/restaurant-nacional/#reviews4. Yes, see http://docs.wpgeodirectory.com/widgets/
5. You mean images? They have to be uploaded to the correct folder for GD to work, so they have to be added using the GD image uploader.
6. That can be achieved with the advanced search plugin.
Using a category called location might defeat the purpose of the map a bit, your visitors can just use the map to go Oost or West?7. When adding a listing, you have to nominate a default category.
On the map the listing will show using the default category marker, unless you hide the default category for that listing, then the listing will still be there but then it will use the marker of the secondary category.October 29, 2014 at 10:53 pm #20049Hi Guust,
Thanks for your quick reply. I’ll look into your answers to 1 & 4 tomorrow but had some additional questions on the advances search plugin:
– Will the advanced search form automatically be displayed? On the demo it looks like some categories have a custom search and others don’t.
– Can I search near a location instead of a title as it is now?
– Can I have 4 main categories of which two of them will have some sub categories? Will that work without purchasing Custom Type Post plugin?
– Are those custom post types in the drop down menu on the demo? Or are those the main categories?3) I want to rate the places. I have added Rating at GeoDirectory-Place Settings-Sorting Options, but not seeing it anywhere. I’m probably doing something wrong but I can’t see what….
5) Is there no other way to upload the images to the correct folder? This means I have to download all images from my media library and upload them again one -by-one to the uploader. And this for over 100 posts with an average of three images….
6) I agree that having a category called Oost is a bit strange but I want visitors to be able to filter results on the area, without moving the map, so I figured creating a category for it will do the job…. Am I right?
7) Found it thanks!
8) Is there any way to add items from AiT themes directly to places through import tools that you know of by any chance? Importing an XML file does not work – it comes back with the following error: Invalid post type ait-dir-item
October 30, 2014 at 9:15 pm #20169-Will the advanced search form automatically be displayed? On the demo it looks like some categories have a custom search and others don’t.
No, you have to organise the advanced search at GD > Place Settings.
If there is no custom fields added it will not display.
You are confusing categories with custom post types: http://docs.wpgeodirectory.com/places-categories-and-listings/Can I search near a location instead of a title as it is now?
The NEAR field allows you to search near a location …– Can I have 4 main categories of which two of them will have some sub categories? Will that work without purchasing Custom Type Post plugin?
Yes, you can: http://docs.wpgeodirectory.com/places-categories-and-listings/– Are those custom post types in the drop down menu on the demo? Or are those the main categories?
They are custom post types.3. It looks like you removed the standard rating system, see attached image from the demo site: http://wpgeo.directory/location/
That sort setting will display a listing with more stars before another listing in any search.5. You can add the filenames to a CSV file and upload them using FTP:
http://docs.wpgeodirectory.com/core-general/#csv6. You are not wrong, but it defeats the purpose of a dynamic map a bit 🙂 but that is my opinion.
8. Probably not. Every plugin uses different setups in databases, but what you can do is create a CSV file as per http://docs.wpgeodirectory.com/core-general/#csv and go and find the relevant entries you need in the database, but they might be in different tables etc.
November 4, 2014 at 9:35 am #20482Hi!
Thanks again. I have some remaining questions:
a) Subcategories:
I have added subcategories (i.e. French Restaurants under the parent restaurant) but they are only made visible with an – sign before it. From the lay-out it is not quite clear that they are subs. How can this be adjusted? See http://newsite.eat-amsterdam.com/location/ for an example on the search form.b) At the top of my search form there are two fields; one for search and one for near. Why is there no text showing in the (first) search field? And where can I adjust this?
c) Can I get a search button (as on the bottom of the advanced search form) at the top of the form – next to the ‘near field’ as well?
d) I have added Rating at GeoDirectory-Place Settings-Sorting Options, but not seeing it anywhere. I’m probably doing something wrong but I can’t see what… You said above that it looks like I have removed the standard rating system – how would I get this back to make sure the ratings are shown?
e) When uploading a cdv file to transfer old places into this plugin I want to attached the images as well, as you suggested. What is the post name for that? It is not mentioned here: http://docs.wpgeodirectory.com/core-general/#csv
Thanks again
November 4, 2014 at 10:28 am #20491a) Have you tried any of the other options: select, check or link?
b) GD > design > search
c) That would require customization.
d) I think you might have disable “reviews” at GD > design > detail > Exclude selected tabs from detail page but if you give your admin details then I can have a look.
e) You cannot attach the images.
You will need to just put the filenames in the IMAGE column and then transfer the images into the folder nominated at the end of the upload process.November 4, 2014 at 10:45 am #20493a) yes, the only option is select because other options do not allow for multiple selections. But with all these options, the categories are not displayed as nested, just with an ‘-‘ in front of it. Other ideas on how to get the nested look as Tom submitted?
b) Perfect, thanks.
c) ok, any direction on where to edit this class (geodir_submit_search) and make it visible on the other location?
d) Yep. Fixed.
e) ok, get it now. Will try.
Thanks again.

I asked Stiofan to look at the styling of the nesting in your other topic.
November 4, 2014 at 12:19 pm #20516e) Are post_rating & post_pricerange the accurate post type to use for the custom fields I have created? And how do I set the value for these post-types; same as in the custom fields?
thanks
November 4, 2014 at 12:33 pm #20517I don’t really know without seeing your custom field settings, but normally the column name should be geodir_yourHTMLname.
You also need to make sure that the column is in the same position as the column in the database field.
I suggest having a look in your geodir_gd_place_detail table and to try to upload one listing and see how you go.November 4, 2014 at 1:10 pm #20520checked the table and tested an upload. worked like a charm. thanks again Guust. You are a life saver.
