    I’d like to do a site similar to visitmidlothian.org.uk. Any tips on where to start?

    That site seems to use a custom theme and custom CSS, together with some other WordPress plugins other than GD.
    A similar look can be achieved with using the GD Framework and child theme and using some custom CSS.
