Good afternoon! I have high hopes of making a multilingual bulletin board with the help of GD and WPML. Please let me know if I can implement what I have in mind.

I am designing a bulletin board for different countries. Users will create announcements in interfaces in their own languages, for example in Ukraine in Russian and Ukrainian. Is it possible to make it possible for a visitor to find an ad in all cases, whether it works in the Ukrainian interface or in Russian? And he should find the ad, if he will enter the name of the city in Ukrainian and Russian in search of the location. I could not implement it. You can check it on my website, but you can also demonstrate it on your demonstration site with one language https://wpgeo.directory/gdf/ I will demonstrate this problem: if a user enters San Francisco into the search, he gets only one result – https://wpgeo.directory/gdf/location/united-states/california/san-francisco/ If he enters “San Francisco”, there will be other results – https://wpgeo.directory/gdf/location/near/gps/37.7749295,-122.41941550000001/,-122.41941550000001/.

For my project, it is very important that the results are the same in both cases. This is important because in Ukraine people speak two languages and can unconsciously search for a city in Russian when they use the Ukrainian interface. And they can also unconsciously search for a city in Ukrainian when they use the Russian interface. That is, it is necessary to make sure that all the ads created in any interface language, created in any language of the entered location – they can be found all in the interface of any language, entering the location in any language, even it can be different from the interface language.

    Can this be implemented?

If a near search is entered you will get the results from google.

Can you share the searches you are doing?

Share some example URLs like this one:

    https://wpgeo.directory/gdf/location/near/gps/37.7749295,-122.41941550000001/,-122.41941550000001/

In the languages you are talking about. Let us know if there are some that turn out wrong, especially.

I showed on the screenshot how I got the result https://wpgeo.directory/gdf/location/near/gps/37.7749295,-122.41941550000001/,-122.41941550000001/

I know it’s weird looking for a city in the U.S. in Russian. But it’s not strange at all, if you look for a city in Ukraine in Russian when you are in the Ukrainian interface.

The user is misled by the fact that Google offers the name of the city in Russian when looking for it in Russian in English or Ukrainian interface. As a result, the filtering data is incorrect.

I will show you an example a little later.

You can translate the location page, too.

I don’t know what you’re suggesting we do.

But I will try again to explain what problem I noticed.

Let’s consider such a scenario of visitor behavior. It works in the Ukrainian interface. He enters into the search field of the location switch the first 4 letters of the city: “одес”. As a result, Google gives him options: “Одеса, Одеська область (місто)” is the Ukrainian name. And the second variant – “Одесса, Одесская область, (місто)” – is the Russian name of the city Odessa. If the user chooses the Ukrainian name, he will get the right result – the site will show him the announcement. If the user chooses the Russian name – the site will not be able to show the desired announcement, because in the announcement with the Ukrainian translation there is a Ukrainian name of the location. This is a problem, because Google has offered a variant of the desired city user in Russian. The user thinks that since Google has shown this city, there should be an announcement with this city. But no, it is not in the Ukrainian translation. As a result, the user thinks that there are no ads in Odessa.

Do you understand what I’m talking about?

I think so, but it would help if you could share a URL where that is happening so we can make sure we are understanding each other.

Those are not search URLs, that is the location page.

So, what we are talking about is that the Location Switcher should only show links to the location page in the active language.

    Have I got it right?

Yeah, that’s exactly what I’m talking about. Is that a good idea?

Seems sensible but definitely requires translation of the location pages, I would think. The developers will take a look and consider it.
