How to sort by category with featured listings on top

I’d like category pages to show featured listings at the top of the list when browsing the category url such as http://www.site.com/place/category.

I’m also hoping that the location pages + category will sort with featured listings on top if someone browses to: http://www.site.com/place/region/city/category

I already enabled the sort option under Geodirectory/Place Settings/Sorting Options by dragging “featured field” to the right and enabling that. However, the listings do not sort when I choose the sort by pulldown.

How can I make this work?

Make sure to set the sort by featured as the default sort.
For location pages, order the Popular post widget by Featured.
