Limit or hide the category markers on a listing

Can the number of category markers shown on the listing, under the title, be limited to one row or can they be made hidden?

you can hide them all and show a X number of them with CSS.

What kind of listing would have that many category though? Would tag be a better fit for that?

A grocery store listing would have hundreds of brands. I’m using categories because it is the most convenient way for a user to just check the brands they offer, from a predetermined list, when creating a listing. And I want them to be searchable when using the “search for” box.

If I use the tags, then each word would have to be typed in on the form by the user. More tedious and probable for misspelling. Both options are there, time will tell which one they use the most.

A custom field is probably a better option for something like that?

I had custom fields set up so the user could just check the boxes they wanted on the form, and they displayed nicely in the tabs, but these custom fields are not part of the search when a keyword is entered in the search for box.
