I have a collaborative working proposition. I am having difficulty getting Widget Logic to aim content (specifically, different country-specific variations of an advertisement slide-show) depending on visitor country when geolocation search results are being displayed (I have exhausted support input on this one and it is deemed a customization).
I note that others have requested either location session information be retained after visiting non-gd pages on their site or that location information be kept between sessions (e.g., with a cookie). I’d therefore like to throw this out to the GD community (members and buyers – any support input welcome too!) in case there is interested in a collaborative approach that might go some way to address these issues.
What I would like to achieve (it will take a long time for me to figure out how to do it!) is incorporating a location cookie with the following characteristics:
1. sets (and re-sets) a location COUNTRY every time any of the following happens:
– visitor is geolocated (e.g., on arriving at your directory);
– ‘Near Me’ is selected on the Search Bar – leading to geolocation;
– a ‘Near Me’ search is conducted (using geolocation) using the Near Me widget;
– a location is selected (City, Region or Country – including ‘everywhere’) on the Location Selector (e.g., main menu).
2. is relatively long duration cookie.
Essentially the cookie gives a ‘last indication’ of country of interest of the website visitor (including the option of everywhere/’not set’). This cookie value would then be used in collaboration with Widget Logic to provide Country-specific content on (GD and non-GD) pages – with country location carried forward to later visitor sessions too. I aim to use this for targeting slide-show adds based on country – allowing me to monetize the directory and also (just as importantly) strike cross-promotion/partnership deals with suitable organizations/enterprises on a country-by-country basis. I am just interested in setting a location country that could be used in Widget Logic – not in having this determine display of search results – that would require extra work!
This is something that I think would be of interest to the majority of multilocation addon members/buyers – it could be adapted to monetize single-country directories based on region or city location. I believe the necessary code for determining country is there in GD in various places (the Add Listing page can determine country from geolocation), and need so to be incorporated in code that would (re)set a cookie. What do you think then – is there any interest in working collaboratively (on this thread) to see if we can code a current country location cookie?!
