    Hello all
Thank you again for the amazing support. I am not sure if this is actually a support question but I am struggling greatly over how to best build out my site. I am building a real estate based site and I am trying to figure out categories vs location. For example, if my Seattle WA home buyers want info, do I make Seattle a category in a drop down or do I use the “change location” feature? The goal is that a visitor ends up on my site and wants to get info on the type of home that we are going to focus on. Is it best to make every region (Seattle, Denver NY, etc.) a category or use the change location feature?
Thank you and if this is not a support question, I apologize.

We recommend you use the location system that is built in, as opposed to creating tags or categories for locations.

Try starting with adding listings in each of the areas/neighbordhoods/cities you will be serving or focusing on, then, when using full location in the URL, check the location page to see the layout. Add widgets to the layout to show all the different CPTs or featured listings so the location page is robust.

Once yo uupgrade to GDV2 you can also make a type of ‘landing page’ using GD Listing and GD Map focused on a specific city, too, maybe with some special design or focused on a particular category.

If you have a list of locations you will serve, then you can also just as easily put links to the location pages into the menu.

    Thank you Alex
I am not sure what you mean by using the full location in the URL. Also, where do I find the location page?

    Thank you

    Check your GD pages

    GD – Settings – General – Pages

Look for the location page there and click ‘view’

For more info about permalinks see:

    Thanks
I changed the permalink structure and found the location page. In my case I have listings in two states. Is there a way to have each state have its own location page so that I can link to that specific state?

    Thank you

The pages already exist, probably, if you have added listings there.
Are you using the location in the detail page URL?

a location page URL is like

    /LOCATION_SLUG/%country% or
    /LOCATION_SLUG/%country%/%region%/ or
    /LOCATION_SLUG/%country%/%region%/%city%/

So, if you have location in the detail page URL, you should be able to place your location slug in there and find the location page.

You should also try out this element to get those URLs.

    Thank you Alex
I am making a little progress. I used the gd_locations shortcode and it worked great. The problem for my site is that it produced all of the cities rather than the state (region). My goal is, for now, to have it list the two states that I have created listings for. They are Washington and Oregon. Hope to add more soon. Is this something that I change in permalinks?

    Thank you

Please share a link to the location page.
Your regions should be there in the URL, no?
So, if you knock off the city, you get the region location page.

Then, once you have the URL, you can add a link to it anywhere you like.

    Sure thing.

For what it’s worth, Archive pages can work the same way, but what you usually want to do is have a list of categories, and then the categories added to your menu through the WP Menu settings -> GeoDirectory Place Categories (example)

These links will be updated with the current location automatically, or you could get the ones pointing to your two featured states and hardcode the links into the menu. These are the same links shown in the GD Categories widget.
