Move nearest related listings to sidebar

On the detail page, I’d like to move the related listings (sorted by nearest) from being a tab to being in the sidebar. I tried using the GD > Related Listings widget in the sidebar, but it lacks the option to sort by nearest.

I understand this is probably because the widget is meant for any page, so there may not be a known location to be “nearest” to. Can the widget be modified to use nearest when on a detail page? Or perhaps you could make another version of the widget that would only work on detail page widget locations (widgetize the existing related posts tab)?
