Hey Guys,
Can you guys look into this and possibly provide alternative maps solutions for geodirectory: I will try more research, I tried to click on the link they gave but it’s not working. Probably millions of people freaking out right about now. I’m not sure how the new fee will effect geo maps if tons of directory users are loading the map each month.
————————————-Hi,
Today we are announcing important changes, including our new name – Google Maps Platform, a simplified product structure, pay as you go pricing for all, and more. Please take a few minutes to review the announcement to familiarize yourself with the upcoming changes.
We would like to highlight a few updates that may impact your implementation. Beginning June 11th, we are launching our new pricing plan and providing all users access to support. We’ll continue to offer a free tier — all developers will receive $200 of free monthly usage of our core products.
In addition, this change will require you to enable billing and associate it with all of your Google Maps Platform projects. Creating a billing account helps us better understand your usage so we can continue developing helpful products. It also allows you to scale easily with less downtime and fewer performance issues if your product grows beyond the $200 of free monthly usage. For additional visibility and control you can set daily quotas or billing alerts.
How does this affect your current projects?
Based on your project usage over the last 3 months and our new pricing plan, we estimate that your new cost will be less than $200 a month and will be covered by our $200 monthly free credit. This estimate does not include usage from other projects or keyless implementations.
We want to support you along the way. Please read our Guide for Existing Users to understand how these changes may impact your account and what steps you need to take.
Thank you for using Google Maps Platform.

So you will not pay anything unless you get more traffic.
You can switch to OpenStreetMaps if you like at GD > Design > Maps tab > Select Maps APIThanks
May 2, 2018 at 9:58 pm #428845Thanks Guust,
I read some more about it. They want us all to setup an account probably with a credit card to bill us if we go over 200. I’m not sure how that will be measured. All I know is I have a bad experience with google adwords years ago, at .10 cents a click I blew through 800 dollars within minutes. No thank you!
Yes I will be switching to something else or not using google maps at all. It’s a nice feature but it’s not needed to dish info to our customers. Maybe if my site can make lots of money it would be worth paying more for these things. But as one charges so will another, then another. I wish I could get residuals from google selling my life’s info over and over. I would probably not need to make websites anymore. LOL
May 2, 2018 at 10:11 pm #428846I’m writing a blog post to provide info about estimating how much traffic you can get before being charged.
The limit until June 11th will remain 25000 requests per day, after it very hard to tell because each type of call has different limits.
In any case everyone will have a $200 credit.
This is the pricing table for the Google Maps API for Maps:
Free monthly usage ($200 value) Price per thousand calls Monthly volume range 0—100,000 100,001+ Native Static Maps Unlimited loads $0.00 $0.00 Native Dynamic Maps Unlimited loads $0.00 $0.00 Embed Unlimited loads $0.00 $0.00 Embed Advanced Up to 14,000 loads $14.00 $11.20 Static Maps Up to 100,000 loads $2.00 $1.60 Dynamic Maps Up to 28,000 loads $7.00 $5.60 Static Street View Up to 28,000 panos $7.00 $5.60 Dynamic Street View Up to 14,000 panos $14.00 $11.20 This is the pricing table for the Google Maps API for Routes:

I may be too optimistic, but my impression is that for most things, like for example Native Dynamic Maps, they actually raised limits.
Most probably, 99.9% of our users will not have to pay.
The biggest change is that from June 11th they will require you to enable billing for all your Google Maps project and that can be done only if you have a credit card.
Thanks
May 2, 2018 at 10:23 pm #428847Thanks guys for the quick responses. I’m going to go a little negative on this for a minute.
Yes, I am a little paranoid, I will get that out right off the bat. I know this was an issue back in the day and I’m sure it still goes on today.
What will stop “dark google” “contractors” “not associated to google types but really associated” to write bots to hit our geo sites and others to load these maps over and over again to rack up our costs????
We already have bots spamming our sites, trying to sign up, trying to modify the admin accounts. I’m 99.9% positive this will happen.
This just all around sucks.
I really appreciate you guys getting on top of this and that is why I love geodirectory. I hope we can all find a reasonable solutions. Too much is changing too fast. 🙁
May 2, 2018 at 10:51 pm #428848They are providing a tool to create alerts and limit your daily budget if you really fear something could go out of control.
I really don’t think Google would want to destroy their reputation to start stealing few dollars from small users.
In their new User Guide they have a FAQ section with this question:
Can I still use Google Maps Platform for free?
and the answer is:
Yes. Starting June 11, 2018, when you enable billing, you get $200 free usage every month for Maps, Routes, or Places. Based on the millions of users using our APIs today, around 98% of them can continue to use Google Maps Platform for free with this credit.
2% are big portals with hundreds of thousands of hits per day that probably abused the Google Maps API in the past. Not the average GeoDirectory website.
In any case tomorrow we will investigate this more in depth and we will update you all with a blog post.
Thanks
May 2, 2018 at 11:02 pm #428849Thanks again guys.
I will be trying out open street maps. Want to see how that works. Always good to have options anyways.
May 3, 2018 at 1:25 am #428858I’m obviously in the 0.01% then!
Based on your current usage over the last 3 months and our new pricing plan, we estimate that your cost will exceed the current $200 free tier.As an incentive, we are offering you a one time promotional coupon of $500.00. To activate this coupon, you must enable billing and load this coupon to your account before June 11th.
We want to support you along the way. Please read our Guide for Existing Users to understand how these changes may impact your account and what steps you need to take.
May 3, 2018 at 1:42 am #428863Maps are not critical to my directory. I will be moving to Open Street Maps. It just reinforces my conviction that all social media platforms will be making using their APIs harder and harder to justify using.
May 3, 2018 at 4:01 am #428873This is what Geodirectory is using on my site for last 30 days
May 3, 2018 at 8:06 am #428886Jennie, where did you see those stats?
thx
May 3, 2018 at 8:09 am #428887Chris22 if you click onto the google console link in the email that they sent out yesterday it will bring up all your API’s
May 3, 2018 at 8:44 am #428894The vast majority won’t be affected by this, its more of an inconvenience if they force everyone to submit billing details. If you want to used Open Street Maps (OSM) then GD already has that option, infact if you have your maps set to “Auto” (which it is by default) if google maps api fails to load then OSM will take over, so for example people viewing your site in countries where Google is banned will auto see OSM instead of broken maps. I’m not sure how google will implement the hard limit but i would hope we can do something similar.
