Organize my uploads

I understand that it is recommended to have the “Organize my uploads into month- and year-based folders” checked for the media settings.

I was wondering how critical this is, and if not checking it, will it cause a major problem.

I ask this because when I export files from one site and import to another (both sites are using the GD Supreme child setup) it says that the media needs to be copied into a specific folder, which I understand that it needs to be there for the media links to work. However, to keep things simple, if the box is unchecked, then all media will go into one folder, solving the issue of needing to copy the media into a different folder.

Just asking to see what the issue may be if unchecked and if it is something I could live with. Thanks!
