    Hi,

A few of our categories were inadvertently set as Parents when they should have been subcategories instead. When trying to assign the proper parent category to any of them (for example, assigning “Massage Therapy” to the “Health & Wellness” parent) and selecting “Update” we are prompted to “Upload Image” and Choose a category icon. Without uploading an icon (a feature we’re not currently using) the system isn’t allowing us to save the changes. How did this become a mandatory selection and/or is there anything to do to work around it (except for adding category icons)?

    Thanks!

    Ray

Category icons have always been mandatory. If your setup did not ask for them, there must have been something wrong with your setup, most likely some other plugin that changes the requirement.

We really haven’t changed anything and listings worked fine when we imported them and categories. It’s only asking for us to upload a Category icon now that we are changing some to become subcategories. Maybe I’m not clear about what is a category icon? Is there a default that is assigned and we can simple re-associate the image? These are not the custom map markers that some are using, correct? Would appreciate any clarification. Thanks!

“category icon” is what is used to mark the listing on the map, and to put in front of the category in category lists. See image.
I think what you call a “custom map marker” is exactly the same.
A default one might have been used that was set up at GD > design > map > Upload map default marker icon.

So to clarify, if we are just trying to change from category to subcategory and plan to use the default marker, we need to “upload” it each time? It is set correctly as the default in GD > Design > Map as “pin.png” and also downloaded and re-uploaded pin.png to set as default and still won’t allow a category modification. If I am needing to upload the same pin.png each time we update a category, it seems like I am doing it wrong?

Just upload the marker once to your media if it is not there, and keep connecting the same one if you like.

That worked, thanks! Still not entirely sure why the active categories all used the default pin.png but when we try to make any changes to the category it requires us to associate it with the default pin.png. Will this apply only to the batch of categories we imported or for all categories moving forward, any time a new one is added or a change is made? Also, if we do choose to use custom category markers in the future, is there a preferred image?

    Appreciate your help!

That might be how you were able to by-pass the requirement, by uploading the categories in a CSV.
You normally cannot add a category without an icon.
There is no preferred image, but about 40×40 max I would say.
