Parent/Child Search Results

Hello,
I’m trying to add Parent Categories and Child Categories for Custom Posts Types. It seems to work fine, until I go to search the post. All the child categories show in the search (for 1 parent category) without any type of hierarchy. And the other parent category isn’t even in the search. Both parent categories do display underneath the search as a featured category. How can I have both parents show in the search, and the child categories show up when a parent it is clicked on?
