I have it so that free listings are set to prompt users to renew every 3 months. If someone does not renew their listing I have it going into draft. If I publish the listing after it has went into draft will they be prompted to renew the listing again in 3 months? Or does my renewing it as admin change that so they don’t have to renew it?

Packages only get the correct effect if added from the frontend.
So if you re-publish from the backend, they will stay published, but you can set it to expire using the backend settings. But it will not trigger a reminder if done from the backend.
If you renew from the frontend and set the payment to “done”, be aware that the user will get emails letting them know that their listing is published and paid etc.

Possibly the best idea is to get unpaid listings downgrade to the most basic of listings you have, rather than going to draft. That prevents dead links too.

    Thanks

Thanks Gus, I still need some clarification:

When you say “Packages only get the correct effect if added from the frontend.” do you mean when they are initially created?

What I am understanding you to say is if I “renew” a “free” listing for someone from the backend they will NOT receive notification email warning for their free listing to auto renewal 3 months later (or whatever time I set renewal date for)? If not, will I as admin at least receive the notification? That is, will anyone receive a notification for a listing about to expire when I previously renewed it via the backend?

As for paying listings, if it’s a listing that normally would be paid for and they didn’t pay and I renew it manually are you saying they will receive a notification stating the listing was published and paid even if they didn’t pay?

I mean that the effect of packages on listings only get the correct effect if added from the frontend.
Adding a listing from the backend or import, let’s say a 3 month recurring package, will not get reminders or renewals. The payment contract must be authorized by the user at the gateway for that to take effect. Without that gateway notification to your GD setup, the package payment settings will have no effect.

Renewal notices are sent to the owner of the listing, and only if there is a valid gateway notification for that listing.

As for paying listings, if it’s a listing that normally would be paid for and they didn’t pay and I renew it manually are you saying they will receive a notification stating the listing was published and paid even if they didn’t pay?
When publishing a draft listing, an email is generated to the owner of the listing.
If you set an invoice to paid, an email is generated to the owner.
The owner of the listing can be changed before you take all of the above steps. And you may have to delete any pending invoices for the old owner too, to prevent notifications.

    Thanks

Thanks for all the clarification! I’ll have to remember this bit about changing owners of listings when publishing a draft of previously paid listing and deleting pending invoices…

If I recall correctly there was something about claimed listings that was hard to control. Like a listing can’t be unclaimed after it’s been claimed, is that correct? If so, then I’m going to have to wrap my brain around all this when I have less going on in my brain… lol

That is not quite correct. A listing can be “unclaimed” at any time in the backend, but that will not change the owner of the listing. That will need to be done manually if required.

    Thanks
