what does this mean “Renewal for free package? Tick to allow renewal of listing with free package.”

    it’s in GD/prices and payments/general

I have my free packages set to “Expire, Downgrade to Expire”. So, what will having that ticked do?

Normally free packages do not have a time limit, but some people like setting a time limit because they want them to disappear if not “renewed”. It prevents incorrect old listings, but on the flipside, listings will disappear after the time limit set if not renewed by the user.

    Thanks

On further checking, the purpose of this option is to prevent customers to “renew” their free listing, in case you want to allow users to use a free package only once. If used like that, on expiry the users who want to keep a listing will need to upgrade to another package.

This sounds interesting. Could you break down how this works?

Right now I have a package titled “Free” under GD/Prices and Payments/Prices. This Free Package is set to “Expire” under “Expire, Downgrade to”.

Does “Renewal for free package?” in the General Tab by default force an upgrade if unticked?

Also, could I make it so the free listing doesn’t disappear when it expires changing “Expire, Downgrade to” the same package “Free Package” so it essentially doesn’t expire? And in this case if “Renewal for free package?” in the General tab is unticked would they be forced to upgrade when updating the listing?

This was sort of hard to explain… lol

By default, a free listing does not have a renew link, but can have an upgrade link.
If you want to enable free listing to be renewed, then you can tick that box.
That way you can set an expiry, and the system will send expiry emails for free listings too.

The upgrade link is only available for listings in a package that has “Has Upgrades? > YES”.

I think that is correct. But it would not be different than setting free listings to never expire.

I’ll get Kiran to confirm my answers.

Thanks guys, I’ve wondered if I should offer free listings and how I would implement them. I think my biggest fear with free listings is that they may go bad (if the business goes out of business).

So, it is nice to know that a free listing can be renewed. I’ll have to wrap my brain around how to make this happen. Ideally to prevent bad content (no longer in business) a listing could be free and expire in 6 months. Before expiring the listing would send a notification. The lister would then renew or upgrade. That sounds pretty nice to me! I can see how starting up a directory in this way would be a good idea.

I could even start a listing for someone, they can claim it, then the are forced to upgrade to a free listing or one of the paid. That would be nice.

So, when and where does this renewal appear? And do both free and paid listings prompt users to renew the same way?

    Hello Jeff,

So, when and where does this renewal appear?

The renewal link will be appear once listing expiry date falls in the date interval set in GeoDiredctory > Price and Payments > Notifications > Pre Expiry Notifications To Clients.
Renewal link will be appeared in listing actions section on listing detail page and on my listings page.

And do both free and paid listings prompt users to renew the same way?

    Yes

Right now I have a free package for CPT “Place” that expires in 30 days. I do not have this renewal option ticked. I have some quick questions:

1.) if someone joins under the free package when “Renewal for free package? Tick to allow renewal of listing with free package.” is NOT ticked and then I tick it later before their listing expires does it apply to every listing that was added before it was ticked?

2.) if I change the 30 day free package from 30 days to, say, 6 months does a listing that joined under the 30 free package instantly change from 30 days to 6 months (whether renewal is ticked or not)? or does it change when they renew (if renewal is ticked before they joined or after they joined)?

Yes, it will apply to every listing with a free package.

No, the package days for existing listings will not change unless they are renewed and adopt the new settings.

awesome, thanks alex, this helps a lot.

So, for ultimate clarification, I currently have a 30 day free package and I do not have renewal ticked. A listing joins under that circumstance. If I tick the renewal to allow renewal it will make it so they can renew. If I change the package from 30 days to 6 months hen they renew it will be for 6 months. Correct?

The only other thing I want to clarify is, if someone doesn’t renew in time I want to make it so that the listing expires. Prior to expiring the user will get at least one notification. I understand it to be that expired listings are not accessible via the front end. I can set it via the backend to not delete expired listings. This way I can republish expired listings for users. If all that is correct I think I’m going to make it so all CPT’s have a free option for at least 3 months or longer. Originally I was worried about offering free options because businesses go out of business so often. But, if they’re forced to renew free listings then this could be a good way to ensure quality listings. Thanks for your time! Please let me know if I’m missing anything, misunderstanding anything, and/or if you have any suggestions. Thanks again! I’m sooo close to having this baby complete!

Also, regarding “Prices and Payments” “Notifications” are the “PRE EXPIRY NOTIFICATIONS TO CLIENTS” only sent to expiring listings? I know that may seem like an obvious answer. I just want to make sure I understand this as thoroughly as possible so I word the notifications correctly and setup everything correctly. So in regard to paid, subscription listings:

Is it correct that the expiry notifications do not go out to subscription listing users when their listings are about to be renewed automatically?
Is there a time when paid listings will receive an expiry notification? If so, please explain.
If a paid listing is not paid and is set to “Expire, Downgrade to” a “Free Listing” what kind of notification does the user receive and when? Or do they not receive one until the free listing is set to expire?

The expire date is set on the listing when the package is applied, this tells the system whether the listing has an expire date or to never expire. This information will not be updated by changing the setting to allow free listings to renew because it is part of the listing.

When the expiration process is enabled, are sent out based on the settings in the Notifications tab under PRE EXPIRY NOTIFICATIONS TO CLIENTS.

    Thanks Alex,

I have this option set in admin so that renewal of free listings is an option. Say someone joins a package that is free for 30 days. If I change the package to 60 days before they renew do I understand it correct that they will still only have 30 days AND when they update their profile it will change to 60 days?

Also, regarding “Prices and Payments” “Notifications” are the “PRE EXPIRY NOTIFICATIONS TO CLIENTS” only sent to expiring listings or do they also go out for paid listings? I know that may seem like an obvious answer. I just want to make sure I understand this as thoroughly as possible so I word the notifications correctly and setup everything correctly. Also in regard to paid, subscription listings:

Is it correct that the expiry notifications do not go out to subscription listing users when their listings are about to be renewed automatically?
Is there a time when paid listings will receive an expiry notification? If so, please explain.
If a paid listing is not paid and is set to “Expire, Downgrade to” a “Free Listing” what kind of notification does the user receive and when? Or do they not receive one until the free listing is set to expire?
