Hi,
From what I can tell, if I have a listing with a category that is a sub-category of a parent category, and only the sub-category was selected for that listing, when selecting the parent category in the search field, that listing will not show up.
Example: Parent Category : Preservation — Sub-category : museums
Listing : Metropolitan Museum – category : museum — not Preservation
So the question is, is there a way to easily set the search to recognize all the sub categories of a parent category even if they don’t have the parent category selected as part of the listing’s categories?
I hope this is clear.
Thank you!!!

Thanks
April 24, 2018 at 7:05 pm #427847Hi Paolo,
Thank you. So if I give someone a limit of 2 categories for a basic free listing, is there a way to have the parent category auto select by default? Or can they select two sub categories?
This is my real question. When you say ‘mandatory’ it isn’t clear whether the form will somehow make that decision for the person filling it out. So in other words, how do you make sure someone selects the parent category?
Thank you!!
April 24, 2018 at 7:31 pm #427848If you want them to select 2 sub-categories, you must allow for 3 categories.
Thanks!
April 24, 2018 at 7:35 pm #427849So if they select two sub-categories when filling out the form, will the form auto-deselect one of the sub categories? And at the same time auto – select a parent category?
What I am hoping for is that in all cases, a parent category will automatically be selected.
The reason I am asking is that I made a listing yesterday and the parent category was not autoselected. When I went in to look at all the things in that parent category, the listing I had just made did not show up. I had to go back in and edit it to add the parent category.
So I am wondering if there is a setting to make sure that the parent category is always selected. Thank you!!!
April 24, 2018 at 8:16 pm #427855The parent category should get auto-selected when you select a sub-category and normally it shouldn’t let you select the 3rd category. An error should popup saying you can only select 2 categories with this package.
What category selector are you using?

April 24, 2018 at 8:28 pm #427861i just tested to make sure and this is exactly what happens:
So if they select two sub-categories when filling out the form, will the form auto-deselect one of the sub categories? And at the same time auto – select a parent category?
Thanks
April 24, 2018 at 9:01 pm #427871Hi Paolo,
I just did a test on a basic listing that has the limit of 2 categories.
What I found is that the parent category does not count as a category.
I had thought that I needed to put a 2 category minimum in order to compensate for the parent category. But that is not correct, right? I can make one category the allowance and the parent will be included gratis. Is that correct?
thank you so much for your help with all of this.
April 24, 2018 at 9:05 pm #427872It counts it while you save the listing.
Selecting only 2 subcategories and submitting the listing, if you visit the back end you’ll notice that the parent category and only 1 sub-category will be selected and the other sub-category is no longer.
Let me know if this makes sense.
Thanks
April 25, 2018 at 7:46 am #427922Everything makes sense. I wanted to make a basic listing as having one category. The issue I am having is that if you go to edit a listing, the parent category, which is auto-selected, is now counted as a second category. This is of course confusing for someone who is not familiar with the system. You will get a notice in red saying you can’t have more than one category, even if you originally only selected one sub-category — because going back to edit shows the sub-category and the parent category and the system counts them as two.
If at this point you deselect the parent category, then both categories become deselected.
I don’t see a way around this. I think I have to make the basic listing have 2 categories so as not to confuse people.
If you have a better suggestion for me please let me know.
thank you!!
April 25, 2018 at 9:40 pm #428008Either what you suggests, or specify in the field description that free listings only permit 1 parent category and no sub-categories.
Thanks!
