how do we setup search by zipcode using shortcodes?
I’d like to have a search shortcode that allows searching for category, subcategory, and tag by dropdown with text entry for zipcode, city, state, tag, and keyword
Using 3rd-party search plugins like Search and Filter finds the categories as a dropdown and sends users to the GD category listing page, but entering the zipcode in keyword search for an existing listing gets no results
entering zipcode in keyword for default geodirectory search gets no results
completely lost in trying to produce a simple search box
February 1, 2016 at 1:44 pm #115000Since ZIP notes a location, searching for a ZIP code in the Near field should yield the results you are looking for.
The shortcode would be just the one for the GD Search widget:
https://wpgeodirectory.com/docs/core-shortcodes/#search
Searching for category is added with the Advanced Search filter, and tags are searched in the keyword search field.

entering the zipcode in the ‘near’ field does in fact find listings. where do we edit ‘near’?
the shortcode [gd_advanced_search] does not produce a list of categories – it produces four things
CPT
keyword
near
search buttonno option to list categories and subcategories in the search box?
February 1, 2016 at 6:12 pm #115179Hi,
you need to set the category field as an advance search filter.
Let us know if this helps.
Thanks
February 1, 2016 at 6:23 pm #115182how do you do that? no setting I can find in Geodirectory > Advanced Search or in the Category editor
February 1, 2016 at 6:28 pm #115183GeoDirectory >> Place (or other CPT) settings.
Double click on the catgeory field, scroll down to the bottom and enable it as a filter.
Now in Advance Search tab the new filter will be availble for use.
Thanks
February 1, 2016 at 7:17 pm #115236thanks, but…
is there a way to force the ‘customize my search button’ to be default open? and to hide the button?
February 1, 2016 at 7:19 pm #115237Yes in the search widget you have that option.
Thanks
February 1, 2016 at 7:27 pm #115243also where can we edit the fields (instead of ‘near’ I’d like to say something like zipcode or city)
thanks
February 1, 2016 at 7:34 pm #115245GeoDirectory >> Design >> Search >> Search form default text settings.
Thanks

another ‘quick question’
in the ‘near’ field, if I enter City AND Region (ie. Rugby, North Dakota) it gives me results.
if I enter just the city Rugby – no results, if I enter the region North Dakota – no results
with Search Autocompleter enabled it will find these locations but requires clicking the autocomplete link and it takes some time to get results (even without the thousands of locations I’m going to be adding)
am I missing a setting somewhere that will get it to recognize the Text entry of the city OR region?
thanks
February 2, 2016 at 11:04 am #115674Have a look here: https://wpgeodirectory.com/docs/core-design/#how
I guess if you entered “Rugby, North Dakota”, listings around the center of that city were shown.
When you entered “Rugby”, listings around the center of Rugby in Tennessee or Rugby in England or …
When you entered “North Dakota” it looked for listings near McClusky maybe, ie near the center of the state anyway. If you select one of the autocomplete suggestions, you will actually get all listings IN the selected location, not NEAR the center of your location.
February 2, 2016 at 11:49 am #115685I have a few dummy data listings using Rugby, North Dakota address
when I enter only ‘Rugby’ I get no results,
if I enter only ‘North Dakota’ I get no results … the how GD works page says it should give me results but it doesn’tif I enter Rugby, North Dakota I do get results – so the city and the region locations exist
with autocompleter enabled you have to click the autocompleter link – not the end of the world but it is clunky and takes some time
the question is — my search is not functioning as it is explained https://wpgeodirectory.com/docs/core-design/#how
is there a multilocations setting or something?
thanks
February 2, 2016 at 11:54 am #115688Can you explain why you think your search is not functioning as it is explained at https://wpgeodirectory.com/docs/core-design/#how ?
It seems to do exactly what it says there as you describe it.February 2, 2016 at 12:44 pm #115710If you enter California, you will get listings somewhere in the Sierra National Forest.
I enter North Dakota (a state similar to California only colder, smaller and less cool) and get no results even though there are listings for places in North Dakota
