Hi
I would like to know if there are any Server requirements I should consider for my hosting.
Thanks
MiriamAugust 4, 2015 at 4:07 pm #48080Hi Miriam,
GeoDirectory will not perform well on shared hostings even if only few other plugins are installed, that is a fact. But WordPress in general requires more than a shared hosting for anything bigger than a tiny blog or a static website.
The optimal solution really depends on several factors.
Things such as:
1 Theme used (there are some themes that are so heavy that without extra plugins will choke on shared servers)
2 Number of plugins
3 Number of listings and traffic forecastedWe normally suggest to start at least with a decent VPS.
The best performances are to be expected on dedicated servers with 8gb of RAM or more. Thanks
August 4, 2015 at 7:40 pm #48124Thank you Paolo for this info.
Also it would be useful if you could suggest me any “security” measurements I should take (plugins, or server specificitions).
Kind regards
MiriamAugust 4, 2015 at 7:49 pm #48125To be 100% honest with you, I’m not a “security freak” so I’m probably the worst person to ask about this.
I’ve been working with wordpress since 2007 and I never used a security plugin or any extra security measure other than good common sense.
The only time one of my site was hacked it was totally my fault. I had FTP passwords saved in my FTP client and a malware I had on the pc expolited that. Malware that was downloaded using a cracked software.
I tried since to avoid such mistakes and my websites have always been secure.
Obviously use strong password, keep up with WordPress updates, themes and plugins updates, avoid leaving deactived plugins hanging in your plugins folder and make sure your hosting provider is known for keeping his systems secure and up to date.
My experience tells me that security plugins are more of a waste of time, money and server resources, but I could be wrong…
Hope this helps.
Thanks

August 22, 2015 at 8:30 pm #50426Anyone willing to share their experience and recommendations on hosting companies?
I am currently with HostGator shared hosting business plan and after reading the forums, very clearly need to upgrade.
Thank you!
August 23, 2015 at 4:36 pm #50528Hi supergirl,
we have our demos installed on CloudWays using a DigitalOcean droplet with 1GB of RAM, 30GB Storage, 2TB Bandwidth, offering unlimited installations. We pay $15 month for it and we are satisfied with performances and we do recommend them.
You just need to make sure you disable varnish.
CloudWays also give you the choice to use other cloud services such as Amazon or Google cloud platform.
DigitalOcean is the cheaper one and the only things it doesn’t offer compared to the other 2, is the option to scale down. If you scale up to a better plan, you can’t scale back down.
While with Amazon and Google cloud you can, however prices are much higher. (almost twice as much).
Thanks

August 24, 2015 at 12:23 pm #50624Hi Paolo,
Yikes! Thanks for mentioning that you need to disable Varnish on CloudWays! I haven’t noticed anything odd with it enabled but its early days yet on this site I am building.
September 21, 2015 at 8:05 pm #53994Hi Paolo,
“we have our demos installed on CloudWays using a DigitalOcean droplet with 1GB of RAM, 30GB Storage, 2TB Bandwidth, offering unlimited installations.”
– So that’s what you use for your demos but how about for an actual listing directory social media website? Do i need 1GB of RAM, 30GB Storage and 2TB Bandwidth as well? Im with godaddy with 512mb of RAM, unlimited Storage and unlimited Bandwidth but im getting notification that i need to upgrade my resources. My site is not even live yet. Im worried that my website wont handle the amount of traffic once people start registering.
September 21, 2015 at 8:11 pm #53997Hi,
considering that you are using Whoop and that you are building a big database of listings, if you want fast performance I would move away from any kind of shared hosting no matter what provider and get at least a VPS with 2GB of RAM.
Unlimited storage and bandwidth are secondary in this case, it will be very hard for you to go over 30GB of storage and 2TB of bandwidth, while on this shared webserver you are already using all resources they are giving you.
We will soon do a blog post about hosting, we already started writing it, giving test results and suggestions about the best hosting for any kind of needs.
Hope it will help.
Thanks
Thanks
September 21, 2015 at 8:21 pm #54000What’s VPS?
September 21, 2015 at 8:28 pm #54002So I need a private server? Should i get linux or windows?
September 21, 2015 at 9:45 pm #54018Called godaddy and they suggested to get wordpress hosting (deluxe): https://www.godaddy.com/hosting/wordpress-hosting
Will that work?
September 21, 2015 at 10:09 pm #54021Hi,
no wordpress hosting will not work. They add their own cache system which is good only for blogs or static websites.
VPS is virtual private server. We suggest to get one with cloudways, the 1gb droplet at $15 month will be more than enough for a while and with the scaling up is possible by clicking 1 button.
Godaddy, I would stay away. I am not a fan of their services.
Thanks
