Users roles/permissions

I have supreme directory and as things are setup, the only way to give them edit rights on the backend on posts or adding businesses to the directory, is to make them admins which I will not do. Is there a fix from your end without installing a plugin from wordpress? With author, contributor, subscriber, and editor which is one level down from admin, you would think one of these would give partial dashboard access without giving access to the whole dashboard.
