where do users update their info

    This might sound stupid but I cannot find it. How do users edit/update their profile. Is the only way to have them do so is to have “Allow user to see wp-admin area” enabled?

    Yes, that is correct with a standard GD installation, that is why that option is there.
    If you want to give users control over their profile on the front end, you can install plugins that add that functionality, we recommend BuddyPress.
