Where to put .po and .mo files, so that they survive update?

We have moved to a support ticketing system and our forums are now closed.

    Dear support team,

    I realized that my localization files get overwritten when updating. (Thank god I have a good backup strategy ;-))

    Is there a place where I can put them, so that they survive updates? Like in the child theme or something?
