    Hi all

I’ve been struggling with speed issues on my site for some time, apparently due to my large amount of plugins, all of which are needed, in fact I could do with more! But my hosting limits me so much.

Currently on a shared host with hostgator. Was looking at Wp engine, I like the way they backup the site, update plugins, deal with security threats etc, but mainly the speed, backups and security are my main reasons for wanting to change. The thought of my site being hacked terrifies me!

Looking at the discussions here, it seems wpengine is not very compatible with Geodirectory, so that’s put me right off. I want all parts of Geodirectory to be able to work as it should obviously, so please can someone recommend an alternative?

Someone suggested Lightening Base, is this still a good one to go with? I know someone also said Hetzner, but their site is confusing me already, especially as it’s in German lol. Plus I don’t think it offers managed hosting at the same price level as Lightening Base?

Are there any others I should consider? Or should I go for Lightening Base?

    Thanks!

I can recommend the VPS at Jaguar PC.
Or http://wirenine.com apparently is good too.
    Or Bluehost.

Hi I have to say that Arvixe has been great I also use Just Host but there CPanel misses a few crucial areas.

Have a look at http://www.arvixe.com I am really happy so far with this hosting company WordPress Installs are easy as well as full Site and SQL backups Geodirectory is working great on here, and its faster than most hosts I have tried including Hostgator etc.

If you are using a shared its always a gamble, but I think as they have less subscribers the speeds increase.

Get the Personal Class ASP Pro they offer it for $8 a month, and give you a free domain amazing…UNLIMITED EVERYTHING….

FTP is also really quick using Filezilla.

    Hope this helps.

    Thanks Guust

With a VPS I don’t get the security and back up features do I?

I’m confused by hosting really. Someone said a VPS won’t necessarily speed the site up due to the amount of plugins, but managed hosting will ensure the site runs at a decent speed as they will adjust it better than I’m able to on a VPS.

Also VPS seems much more expensive than Lightning Base’s basic managed hosting, but with less support.

I’m so confused! I’m getting conflicting advice from all over the place about which kind of hosting I need to go with to get the site as fast as possible!

Like I say, the backups and security features are also a major selling point to me, as I have no experience whatsoever with this kind of stuff and it’s pretty important stuff!

    Thanks

    Sally

Ah, and by the way, minimising plugins will always help.
    Less plugins is faster.

A VPS is still a shared server, but you should be guaranteed that the server is not shared with 100s of others. Some VPS are managed so you have all the features of good shared hosting, but it would not really speed things up, but you should not be competing with too many others.

Probably wirenine.com or BlueHost would run your site just fine.
What is more important is to only use plugins you really need; have another think why you need all the plugins you use. That is more important than the server.

Step one is to optimize your website, you can buy the fastest server but if your website is not optimized, you will have (almost) the same performances.

And optimizing does not necessarily mean get more optimiser plugins, but simplify your theme and plugins.
Simone, is that how you see “optimizing”?

Sure Guust, few plugins and things made “right” 🙂 not a wild and compulsive “click and install” 🙂

    Just FYI :

wirenine.com (which is a managed hosting) will be faster than all other suggested hosting provider suggested for 1 simple reason.

It uses litespeed as webserver while all others use Apache.

Nginx and litespeed are generally up to 10 times faster than apache when installed on the same machine.

We uses Nginx and Fastcgi to avoid using any type of caching plugin on our servers.

This means that if it takes 30 seconds now it could take as low as 3. Obviously if you also follow Guust and Simone suggestion of optimizing your website, you will get even better results.

    Thx
