How to find slugs and how to remove a region

THE PROBLEM
For Places in Devon, I am getting ‘devon-1’ rather than just ‘devon’ showing – for example … http://www.greenfuse.co.uk/location/united-kingdom/devon-1/
So the ‘Region’ ‘Devon’ has the slug ‘devon-1’ associated with it.
I am aware that this came about because WP does not allow duplicate slugs and something else was using the slug ‘devon’.
And something else is till using the slug ‘devon’, because if I try to add anything with the slug ‘devon’ it changes it to ‘devon-2’

MY QUESTIONS
How can I find that “something else” that is using the slug ‘devon’?
Assuming I can find it and remove it, how can I reset the Region Devon to use slug ‘devon’

FURTHER INFO
I had 3 ‘Places’ based in Locations that use Region: Devon (all showing ‘devon-1’)
I deleted these in the hope that the Region Devon might get reset but it was remembered.

I also initially set up ‘county’ categories (for reasons that are not worth going into here) and I’m sure i created one called Devon which would have created a devon slug (although I’m sure that was devon-2!). I have since deleted all those categories.

I am not using Tags (and none of the existing ones show devon).

I did read in another Post “The solution is to search the database for the slug greece and change it to greece-1. Then search for greece-1 and replace all results (except the one you just changed) with greece.”
If, by this, it was meant search by going through all places, categories and tags, I have already done this.
