Default Location And Places Outside That Area

OK, so I am attempted to set up an international directory but I’m confused by the need to set a “Default Location”. I went ahead and set that up as NYC, but when I go to manually add places not near NYC and click Set Address on Map I get a model that says “Choose any address of the (New York) city only.” I must just be missing something.

Also, I can’t seem to bulk import without pre-populated longitude and latitude. Is there a way to get the plugin to geocode on import or do I need to use a third party utility? Thanks!
