Is there any way to search non mapped locations by location?

I want to create a non mapped post type of businesses in a metropolitan area for businesses that don’t actually have a physical location.

    For Example:

There may be people with a photography business that they run out of their home for the Miami Area but they don’t want to use their home address. There also may be a Web Developer that runs his business out of his house in the Miami area as well and he doesn’t want to use his home.

I’d like them to list in a CPT that doesn’t require a mapped location but still requires them to put in their area so people can search for these businesses depending on what area their looking in. Furthermore, I’d like people to be able to further search for categories within this CPT.

    Any suggestions?

The only thing I could think of is come up with a custom post type of online businesses for each metropolitan area or make the area a category but that seems counter intuitive.

You can create a CPT that does not use maps, but still uses locations: hide the listings on the maps at GD > Design > Map
Then tell users to add some generic street address when they add their listing, like “my online business”.

Alternatively, use a location-less CPT with categories like you said, or a custom field or tags.

    Thanks
