Linking two custom post types via a select input

Is it possible to have a select input field as a custom field within a custom post type that dynamically shows a list of entries from another custom post type?

I’ve created two custom post types called ‘short stories’ and ‘authors’. Each short story entry will need to show the details of the author who wrote it. As I have the custom post type which contains the author details, I’d like to be able to have the list of author names appear in a select input when I add/edit a short story entry.
