    And are comments allowed in each listing?

    Ah that was it, the comments allowed on listings was not ticked. DO I have to go into each listing and tick that or is there an easier solution? Thanks.

    Those listings must have been added before you allowed comments site wide, so that should not be a problem for new listings.
    For existing listings do a bulk edit:
    Places > Bulk actions > edit > comments > allow.

    Please check now, if you do changes like that, you have to clear all caches and re-save permalinks.
